Although Naypyidaw is the capital, almost every foreign embassy that handles visas for Myanmar residents is in Yangon, and so are the visa centres run by VFS Global. That makes Yangon the place where people from Mandalay, Mawlamyine and the rest of the country end up with their documents. Many applicants are Myanmar citizens; others are foreigners who live and work in the city, including Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Filipino and Nigerian nationals. This guide covers what the Yangon missions ask for on flights, what foreign residents must add, the main routes from Yangon International Airport, and how to get a reservation from us online. We have no counter in Myanmar; everything is done on our website and by email.

What does the German Embassy in Yangon ask for?
Germany is the busiest Schengen route out of Yangon, partly because the embassy also issues short-stay visas for eight other states.[1] If your main destination is Vienna, Brussels, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Athens, Budapest, Reykjavik or Luxembourg, this is still your embassy.
Its tourist checklist, updated in May 2025, has a flight line that could hardly be clearer: "Flight reservation, rail bookings, others", followed by a note that you "are not required to submit proof of purchase of tickets" and should not buy non-refundable tickets before a visa is granted.[1] A held reservation is exactly what that describes.
The same list is firm about the itinerary. It asks for a realistic covering letter and warns that generic plans "downloaded or copied from social media or provided by agents" are not helpful.[1] So the reservation should reflect your own trip, not a template. Other points from the list: apply at least 15 days before travel and not more than six months ahead, book through VFS, and pay the fee of EUR 90 for adults in US dollar cash at the embassy's rate.[1]
Other Yangon missions and how they treat flights
| Country | Where to apply | Flight wording | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany + 8 states | VFS, decided by the German Embassy[1] | Reservation; no proof of purchase needed[1] | Held reservation |
| Netherlands | VFS Yangon[2] | Checklist issued with the appointment | Reservation unless told otherwise |
| Switzerland | French Embassy, which represents Switzerland[3] | Follow the French list | Ask France's visa section |
| Japan | VFS Japan Visa Application Centre[4] | "Air ticket booking confirmation" for a round trip, naming the passenger, airline and times[5] | Reservation with every detail visible |
| United Kingdom | VFS-run centre in Yangon[8] | UKVI rates flight bookings as of little use for visits[9] | Normally not worth adding |
| United States | US Embassy | Don't buy "tickets until you have a visa"[10] | Skip it unless you want one |
Should any list you receive ask for a "confirmed" or "paid" ticket, take that literally. A held reservation may not satisfy it, and a refundable fare is the safer route.

Japan from Yangon: fees, flights and a useful note
Japan's applications now go through VFS, and its information page lists the documents for each purpose.[4] For sightseeing on your own arrangements, the checklist asks for an "Air ticket booking confirmation", round trip, "mentioning the passenger's name, airlines and departure & arrival date and time".[5] Our reservation PDF shows all of those.
The VFS page also says it does not recommend buying tickets before the visa is approved, except for transit visas, which need a purchased fixed ticket.[4] That transit exception matters: a held reservation is the wrong document for a Japanese transit visa.
A detail Indian residents of Yangon will like: the fee table on the same page shows a much lower visa fee for Indian nationals than for other applicants, though everyone pays the same service charge.[4] Processing normally takes five working days, according to VFS.[4]
Foreigners living in Yangon: the extra papers
If you are not a Myanmar citizen, both Germany and Japan want proof that you live in Myanmar legally, and both use the same building blocks.
- Germany: "Copy of Foreign Registration Certificate and re-entry visa valid for your return to Myanmar".[1]
- Japan: originals and copies of a multiple re-entry visa for Myanmar, a stay permit and the Foreigner Registration Certificate.[6]
The re-entry visa is the one people forget. Say you work for a garment exporter in Hlaing Tharyar and plan ten days in Germany. If your re-entry visa runs out before your return flight, the embassy has no evidence you can come back to the job you describe, and that undermines the whole file. Check its dates against your reservation before you book a VFS slot.
The Netherlands also asks people who do not live in Myanmar to check where they should apply instead.[2] Short-term visitors in Yangon generally apply from home.
Leaving Myanmar: checks you should ask about
Since 2024, news reports have described departure checks at Yangon airport on some Myanmar citizens of military-service age, and limits on overseas work permits. We could not find these rules set out on an official Myanmar government page, so we are not going to describe them as fact. If you are a Myanmar citizen between your late teens and mid-thirties, ask your airline and the immigration authorities what you will need at departure before you spend money on a visa application. A reservation from us will not help with any exit requirement.
Routes from Yangon International that read naturally
Long-haul flights from Yangon nearly always connect somewhere in the region, and an itinerary that does the same looks normal.
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines runs typically two nonstop flights a day from Yangon, about 3 hours 15 minutes.[11] From Changi, connections reach most of Europe and Japan.
- Bangkok: a short hop that many Europe-bound travellers use for a connection. If you choose this, check whether your passport needs a Thai transit visa for the routing.
Yangon–Singapore–Frankfurt fits a German file; Yangon–Singapore–Tokyo fits a Japanese one. Keep both legs on the dates in your covering letter.

Thailand from Yangon
Thai visas for Myanmar applicants moved online. The Thai foreign ministry's notice for Yangon directs applicants to the e-Visa portal and to a separate system for booking a slot to pay the fee at the embassy.[7] The e-Visa form tells you which documents to upload for your category. If it asks for travel evidence, upload what it names; our reservation is a held booking, not a paid ticket, so judge whether that meets the request.
Example: a Yangon family visiting relatives in Austria
Imagine a family of three in Bahan whose daughter studies in Vienna. Austria's short-stay visas are issued by the German Embassy,[1] so they book VFS for 8 November and plan to travel in mid-December.
On 5 November they order a Yangon–Singapore–Vienna return reservation with all three names spelt as in their passports. The covering letter describes the visit day by day; the daughter's invitation and accommodation details match the same dates. Health insurance covers EUR 30,000 for the whole stay, as the list requires.[1] They bring the US dollar cash for the visa fees. Flights are bought only once the visas arrive.
Second example: an Indian engineer in Yangon going to Japan
Now think of an Indian telecoms engineer who has lived in Yangon for four years. He wants to visit Osaka for a week.
He gathers the third-country papers: the multiple re-entry visa, stay permit and Foreigner Registration Certificate, originals and copies.[6] His reservation is Yangon–Singapore–Osaka return, showing his name, the airline and every time, as the sightseeing checklist asks.[5] He orders it three days before his VFS appointment.
Applying from Mandalay or elsewhere in Myanmar
Because the embassies and visa centres are concentrated in Yangon, people from Mandalay, Taunggyi or the delta often travel down for the appointment. Germany's list says the application must be lodged in person through VFS,[1] so there is no way round the trip.
Your reservation should begin where you will really take the international flight. For most people that is Yangon. If you would actually fly abroad from Mandalay, start there instead; what matters is that the itinerary in your covering letter and the booking agree. Book your domestic travel to the appointment separately and leave a margin, because a missed slot can mean weeks before the next one.
If the decision takes longer than expected
Germany's list asks for applications at least 15 days before travel and encourages applying as early as possible.[1] If you apply close to that limit and the embassy needs more time, your reservation may lapse before the decision. That is not a problem in itself: the embassy has already seen it. If they ask for an updated itinerary, order a new reservation with new dates and send that. Never alter the dates on the old PDF yourself.
Ordering from Yangon
- Confirm the embassy that handles your destination, using the table above.
- Read its current checklist and the exact flight line.
- Enter the route from RGN on our booking page, with every name copied from the passport.
- Pay the $9 per person on the Razorpay checkout. If a card issued in Myanmar will not go through, a relative abroad can pay; the passenger names are what matter.
- Look for the email, usually within about 10 minutes.
- Retrieve the PNR on the airline's website. Our guide shows how.
Use order tracking if the email is slow. Fees in other currencies: dummy ticket price.
When to order it
Two or three days before the appointment. Holds last up to a fortnight, but each airline picks the exact time and some release seats earlier. Do not leave it to the morning of the appointment either; give yourself a day to open it on the airline's site. If the embassy keeps your file longer and asks for new travel details, order again then.
Before you go to VFS
- Print everything the day before. Germany wants originals plus one copy, with English or German translations.[1]
- Bring US dollar cash for the German fee.
- Carry your FRC and re-entry visa if you are a foreign resident.
- Check the booking on the airline's site the evening before.
What to avoid
- Agent-made itineraries. Germany says plainly they do not help.
- Using a reservation for a Japanese transit visa, which needs a purchased ticket.
- A re-entry visa that expires before your return date.
- Any edited or invented PDF. If the airline cannot find the PNR, the document works against you.
Yangon FAQ
Does the German Embassy in Yangon accept a flight reservation?
Yes. Its tourist checklist, updated May 2025, lists "Flight reservation, rail bookings, others" and says applicants are not required to submit proof of purchase. It also advises against buying non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted. Keep the reservation in line with a realistic, personal itinerary.
Which Schengen countries does Germany handle in Myanmar?
Besides Germany itself, the embassy issues short-stay Schengen visas for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland and Luxembourg. National long-stay visas for those countries are not included. Switzerland is represented by France, and the Netherlands uses the VFS centre in Yangon.
What does Japan want for flights from Yangon?
For sightseeing, a round-trip air ticket booking confirmation showing the passenger's name, airline, and departure and arrival times. VFS does not recommend buying tickets before approval, except for transit visas, which need a purchased fixed ticket. A reservation suits the visitor visa, not the transit one.
I am a foreigner working in Yangon. What else do I need?
Proof of legal residence. Germany asks for a copy of your Foreign Registration Certificate and a re-entry visa valid for your return. Japan asks for originals and copies of a multiple re-entry visa, stay permit and Foreigner Registration Certificate. Check that the re-entry visa outlasts your trip.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Yangon?
No. We are online only. Orders are placed on our website and paid by card at $9 a person; the reservation then reaches you as a PDF by email, usually within about 10 minutes. Print it in Yangon before your appointment.
Can the reservation start from Yangon?
Yes. Singapore Airlines typically flies two nonstop services a day from Yangon to Singapore, which connect onward to Europe and Japan. Start the reservation at RGN if that is where you will fly from, and keep the dates identical to your covering letter.
How long will the reservation last?
At most a fortnight; the airline sets the exact time. Order it a few days before the VFS appointment, not weeks ahead. If the embassy later wants updated travel details, order a fresh reservation.

$9 per person, sent by email, with a PNR you can open on the airline's site.
Important: the booking we hold has no fare paid against it, so it belongs in your visa file and nowhere near a check-in desk. Refer to it as a reservation in your application. The embassy alone decides whether to issue a visa.
