Salmiya is home to a large share of Kuwait's expatriate families: apartment blocks off Salem Al Mubarak Street, schools nearby, and the sea on one side. What it does not have is a visa centre. When a Salmiya household applies for a Schengen, UK or other visa, the paperwork goes north to Sharq in Kuwait City. This page is written for those families and for single professionals living in Salmiya. It covers where you apply, how to build a reservation for a whole household, the residence and PACI rules that catch people out, and what the checklists used in Kuwait say about flights. We are an online service, with no shop in Salmiya or anywhere else.

| Czech Republic | VFS in Sharq (Arraya Centre)[5] |
| Spain | BLS in Sharq (Kamco Invest building)[6] |
| Airport | Kuwait International (KWI)[1] |
| Spain and residence | Residence valid until your return; PACI certificate if it ends within three months after[7] |
| Our fee | KWD 2.75 per passenger, children included |
Where does a Salmiya resident apply?
In Sharq, at one of the outsourced centres. For a German, Finnish, Icelandic or Norwegian short stay, the German Embassy points you to VFS Global in Arraya Tower.[3] The Czech Republic uses VFS on the same street.[5] Spain's provider is BLS International in the Kamco Invest building.[6] Italy and the Netherlands also use VFS in Kuwait City, and the Dutch page says you may apply there only if you live in Kuwait.[8][14]
So the appointment day starts with a drive along the Gulf Road or the Fourth Ring Road into the city. That is not a long trip, but with children in tow and a folder of originals, it is worth planning. Our Kuwait City page covers each centre in more detail; here we focus on what changes when the applicant is a Salmiya household.
How should a family's reservation be set up?
One booking, every traveller on it, each name exactly as printed in that person's passport. That is the short answer. A few points from experience:
- Children need their own seat on the itinerary. If a child is in the visa application, the child is on the reservation. Infants travelling on a parent's lap still appear as a named passenger.
- Use the passport's machine-readable line for spelling, not the Civil ID or a school record. Middle names that appear in the passport should appear on the booking.
- Same flights for everyone, unless someone genuinely travels on different dates. If a parent flies out a week later, show that honestly on a separate booking.
- Price is per person. At KWD 2.75 per passenger, a family of five pays KWD 13.75 for a return itinerary.
Our view: one PNR for the family is easier for the officer to follow and easier for you to check on the airline's site. We are happy to split it if your circumstances require that.
Think, too, about who signs what. Each family member usually submits their own application, so each folder needs its own copy of the reservation. Print one per person rather than sharing a single sheet between four folders. If a grandparent from India is joining you in Europe and applying separately from home, they are not on your Kuwait booking; they need their own itinerary that matches their own application.
Residence permits, PACI and the dates that matter
This is where Salmiya family files most often come unstuck, because one spouse's residence can run on a different cycle from the other's.
Spain is the most detailed. BLS asks that the Kuwait residence of non-GCC nationals be valid until the date of return, and that the passport has two empty pages. If the residence ends within three months after your return, or you hold only a Civil ID, BLS asks for paperwork from PACI, Kuwait's Public Authority for Civil Information.[7] The passport must be valid for at least six months from the travel date.[7]
The Czech Republic asks for a residence permit valid at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area.[5] On a family file, that applies to each person, so check the dependants' residence dates as well as the sponsor's.
Germany sends stays over 90 days to the embassy rather than VFS.[3] For a normal holiday that does not arise.
A simple habit helps: write each family member's residence expiry date on one sheet before you choose travel dates. If any of them is close, deal with it first.
Booking for the whole family?
KWD 2.75 per passenger, every name on one reservation, emailed in about 10 minutes.
What do the Kuwait checklists say about flights?
Here is the exact text from the two missions that spell it out, plus the Dutch and UK positions.
- Spain (BLS Kuwait): "Confirmed flight reservations/booking (with either booking reference or ticket number)".[7]
- Czech Republic: proof that you can proceed after Schengen, "i.e. confirmed itinerary/airline reservation or airline ticket and required visa".[5]
- Netherlands: a booking held in the applicant's name covering entry and exit, with payment explicitly not required.[9]
- UK: flight bookings appear among less useful documents, unless you are transiting.[11]
For Czech and Dutch files, a held reservation matches the wording. For Spain, a booking with a booking reference is described, and that is what our reservation shows. The word "confirmed" is still a judgement for BLS to make; if they ask you for a paid fare, buy a refundable one rather than argue.
Plan the dates within the Schengen window: lodge the file inside six months of the trip and at least 15 days ahead, then allow a standard 15 days for the decision, which can extend to 45.[10]
US and UK applications from Salmiya
No flight booking needed for either. For the US, the embassy in Kuwait accepts residents for interviews, since it asks people to apply where they live or where they are citizens.[12] The State Department's advice is to buy tickets only after the visa is issued.[13]
For a UK visit, GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide treats flight bookings as unhelpful except for transit.[11] A family heading to London is better served by clear salary certificates, bank statements and school letters for the children.
Planning the appointment day from Salmiya
Treat it like a school morning with more paperwork. A plan that works for most households:
- Three or four days before: order the reservation, so the dates reflect your final leave and school holiday.
- Two days before: print everything, one folder per applicant, and open the PNR on the airline's site once to check names.
- The night before: passports, Civil ID copies, residence pages, PACI certificate if needed, bank and salary papers, insurance, hotel and the reservation, in the order your checklist gives.
- On the day: leave Salmiya early. Rush-hour traffic into Sharq is unpredictable, and building security takes time.
- At the counter: if asked about flights, point to the booking reference on the PDF.
Which routes from KWI suit a Salmiya family?
Kuwait International's airline directory includes Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways, European airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines, and home-route carriers including Air India, IndiGo, Pakistan International Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and SriLankan Airlines.[2]
For families, we prefer one-stop routings with sensible connection times, because that is what you would actually book with children. A Kuwait to Barcelona trip via Istanbul, or Kuwait to Prague via Frankfurt, reads naturally. Avoid itineraries with a 2 am connection that no parent would choose.

Living alone in Salmiya: does anything change?
Very little, except that the whole file rests on you. Single professionals in Salmiya, whether working in Hawalli, Sharq or Ahmadi, follow the same centre and residence rules as families. Two things deserve extra care.
First, the employer's side. Your salary certificate, leave approval and the dates on the reservation should tell one story. If your leave runs from a Thursday to the following Saturday week, the flights should sit inside that window. Private-sector employees should also check their employer's current procedure for approving travel before choosing dates.
Second, the return. Officers want to see that you will come back to Kuwait. A reservation that returns to KWI, next to a residence valid well beyond the trip, makes that point without any extra words.
After the visas arrive: buying the family's tickets
Buy them promptly, and inside the dates on the visas. The visa sticker shows the period of validity and the number of days you may stay; the tickets must fit within both for every family member. If one child's visa was issued with slightly different dates, plan around the shortest one.
You do not have to fly the exact flights shown on our reservation. Many families do choose the same route, because it already suited them, but a cheaper fare on another airline is fine as long as the dates still fit. Keep copies of the application documents in your hand luggage; the German Embassy in Kuwait recommends carrying them when you travel.[3]
Example: a Salmiya family of four heading to Spain
Imagine Joseph and Mini, Indian nurses living in Salmiya, with two children aged 9 and 6. They want ten days in Spain over the spring school break and have a BLS appointment in Sharq on 4 March.
Mini's residence ends in early June, roughly nine weeks after they come home. Under the BLS rules that triggers the PACI paperwork, so she collects it in February.[7] Three days before the appointment, they order one reservation with all four names: KWI to Madrid via a European hub on 26 March, back on 5 April. That costs KWD 11. Each child's folder holds a passport copy, the reservation and the parents' documents. If BLS wants a paid ticket on the day, they will buy a refundable fare and bring it in.

When should a Salmiya family order?
Three or four days before the appointment. Your family's booking is held for no more than a fortnight, and the airline concerned may release it earlier. Families often lock in dates early because of school calendars; that is fine for planning, but wait to order the reservation itself until the appointment is close.
Mistakes Salmiya households make
- Checking only the sponsor's residence, not the spouse's and children's.
- Leaving a child off the booking because "they travel with us anyway".
- Spellings taken from the Civil ID rather than the passport.
- Ordering weeks too early and arriving with a lapsed hold.
- Showing a route that ends in India when the family will return to Kuwait.
Salmiya FAQ
Is there a visa centre in Salmiya?
None that we could confirm on an official page. The German Embassy, the Czech Embassy and BLS Spain all list centres in Kuwait City, in the Sharq area around Al Shuhada Street and Khalid Ibn Al Waleed Street. Salmiya residents travel there for biometrics and document submission, so prepare everything before you leave home.
Do my children need to be on the reservation?
Yes. Every person named in the visa application should appear on the flight reservation, including children and infants. We price per passenger, so a child costs KWD 2.75 like an adult. Use the spelling from each child's passport, not from a school or Civil ID record.
What is the PACI certificate and when do I need it?
PACI is the Public Authority for Civil Information. BLS Spain's tourist checklist asks for a PACI certificate if your residence expires within three months after your return, or if you hold only a Civil ID. Other missions may not ask for it, so check your own destination's list.
Will Spain accept your reservation?
BLS Kuwait asks for "Confirmed flight reservations/booking", with a booking reference. Our reservation has a booking reference you can check on the airline's site. We cannot promise BLS will accept it in every case; if they ask for a paid fare, buy a refundable ticket instead.
Can we pay in Kuwaiti dinars?
Our price for Kuwait is KWD 2.75 per passenger, paid online by card through Razorpay. If you have an Indian bank account, UPI and netbanking also work. There is no cash payment, as we have no office in Kuwait.
Can we fly with the reservation?
No. The seats are held, not bought, so nobody in the family can check in on them. After the visas are issued, buy tickets for the whole family for dates inside the visa validity.
What if our appointment is moved?
Buy a fresh one a few days before the rescheduled slot. The first hold may have run out by then, as none last beyond 14 days. A short gap between appointment and travel is fine; a reservation that has expired before the officer reads it is not ideal.

Please note: a reservation helps explain your travel plan; it cannot win a visa by itself. Describe it accurately, keep every family member's dates aligned, and leave the decision to the consulate.
