Honeymoon planning usually happens in the busiest weeks of your life, with wedding vendors, relatives and leave approvals all competing for attention. The visa part deserves a calm hour of its own, because honeymoon destinations split into two very different groups. Some, like the Schengen countries and the UK, decide your visa before you fly, and a flight reservation is a normal part of that file. Others, like the Maldives, Thailand and Bali, let many travellers in on arrival but check your return flight at the airport. A held reservation is useful for the first group and risky for the second. This guide explains which is which, using the official rules, and suggests a sensible timeline around the wedding date.
Honeymoon destinations at a glance
| Destination | How Indian couples usually enter | What the official source says about flights |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen (Paris, Switzerland, Italy, Greece) | Visa before travel; each partner applies | Netherlands: "a reservation in your name"; buying is optional.[6] Germany (India): "Flight reservation".[7] |
| United Kingdom | Visit visa before travel; each partner applies | Flight bookings are listed among less useful documents.[9] |
| Maldives | Tourist visa on arrival | A complete itinerary "including confirmed return journey tickets" and a "prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility".[1] |
| Thailand | 30-day visa exemption for Indian passports from 15 September 2026 | Onward travel booked inside the 30 days; arrival card filed up to 3 days ahead.[2][3] |
| Bali / Indonesia | Visa on arrival or e-VOA | A return or onward ticket, and six months left on the passport.[4] |
Visa before you fly, or entry on arrival?
This is the question that decides everything else. Ask it first for each country on your honeymoon route.
If you need a visa before travelling, a consulate reads your file weeks before the trip. It wants to see a believable plan: dates, a route in and out, somewhere to stay, and the money to pay for it. Buying flights before you know the outcome is a gamble, and several missions state plainly that you need not buy one.[6] A flight reservation with a real booking reference is built for this stage.
If you are let in on arrival, the check happens at the immigration desk, and often first at the airline's check-in counter before you board. The wording there is about confirmed tickets. The Maldives asks for "confirmed return journey tickets".[1] For these places, our honest advice is to buy your real return flight before you leave. A held reservation may not satisfy an officer who asks for a confirmed ticket, and a honeymoon is the wrong trip on which to test that.
Rule of thumb from our desk: reservation for the visa application, real ticket for the actual journey. If no visa application is involved, skip the reservation and book the trip.
Honeymoon in Europe: what the Schengen file needs
Europe is the most common honeymoon that involves a full visa application. Both partners apply separately; the Visa Code requires each applicant to submit their own form.[10] The application window runs from six months ahead to a fortnight-plus before you fly (15 days minimum), and the European Commission puts normal processing at 15 days, extendable to 45 in individual cases.[5]
Both forms carry arrival and departure dates, and the reservation should mirror them exactly. If you are visiting more than one country, the consulate you apply to is the one where you spend the most time, or the first country you enter if stays are equal.[5]
Example: ten nights in total, with four in Lucerne, three in Paris and three in Rome. Switzerland has the most nights, so you both apply to Switzerland. A reservation from Mumbai into Zurich and home from Rome, plus the train or flight between cities, gives the officer a route that makes sense. Our guide to multiple Schengen countries covers this routing in more detail.
The German checklist in India adds two points worth knowing. Paying for flights early earns no "preferred processing", so there is nothing to gain. And if your spouse is sponsoring the trip, it asks for the marriage certificate.[7] Couples who married recently should have that certificate in hand before the appointment.
A UK honeymoon: what changes
London, Scotland and the Lake District are popular with couples who want cooler weather. The UK process differs from Schengen in three practical ways. First, GOV.UK treats every spouse as a separate applicant with a separate fee.[8] Second, the Home Office lets a family submitting together avoid duplicating shared papers.[9] Third, it ranks flight bookings low as evidence.[9]
For a British honeymoon, then, the reservation is a nice-to-have. Added to the file, it helps an officer see your dates at a glance; it won't carry the application. Put your effort into showing that both of you can afford the trip and have reasons to come home after it.
Maldives, Thailand and Bali: what airlines and immigration check
These three account for a large share of Indian honeymoon trips, and none of them requires a consulate appointment for most Indian couples. The flight question is therefore about arrival, not about a visa file.
Maldives. Visitors to the Maldives receive their tourist visa at the airport. Maldives Immigration sets out what it expects: a machine-readable passport with a month or more remaining, the full itinerary including a confirmed flight home, a resort or guesthouse stay that is booked and already paid, and money to cover your time there. Every foreigner also submits a Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arrival. The page adds that a complete itinerary does not guarantee entry.[1] Two things follow for couples. Buy the real return flight. And book the resort for real and pay for it, because "prepaid" means exactly that. A held hotel reservation is not a substitute here. Our Maldives guide goes deeper.
Thailand. Since 15 September 2026, Indians on holiday can stay up to 30 days without a visa.[3] According to the Royal Thai Embassy in London, you should be able to show a departure inside that 30-day window and where you are staying, and officers can ask to see 20,000 baht for each traveller. The free Thailand Digital Arrival Card must be submitted within three days before arrival.[2] Plan your return within the 30 days and carry the booking. See onward ticket for Thailand.
Bali. For the arrival visa, Indonesia's immigration FAQ wants six months of passport life and proof you are flying home or on to a third country.[4] Check the passport date first. Couples are sometimes caught out by one partner's passport expiring in five months. More on Bali onward tickets.
Many airlines check these rules at departure against IATA's Timatic, a database of passport, visa and entry requirements.[11] In practice, the first person to ask for your return flight may be the check-in agent in Mumbai, not the officer in Malé.
Reservation or paid ticket: which does each stage need?
| Stage of your honeymoon | What usually works | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa application | Flight reservation in both names | Ideal use of a reservation; wait for both visas before buying |
| UK visit visa application | Optional; the Home Office gives bookings little weight | Include one if it helps explain dates; don't rely on it |
| Check-in for the Maldives | Confirmed return ticket | Buy the real return flight |
| Arrival in Thailand | Onward travel within 30 days | Buy the real return; carry it on your phone and on paper |
| Arrival in Bali | Return or onward ticket | Buy the real ticket before you fly |
| Combined trip, e.g. Europe then Maldives | Reservation for the visa stage; real tickets for travel | Book real flights only once the Schengen visas are in your passports |
A honeymoon visa timeline that works around the wedding
The wedding date is fixed. Everything else should work backwards from it. Here is how we would plan a European honeymoon starting a few days after the ceremony. Treat it as an example, not a rule.
- Eight to ten weeks before the wedding: pick the route and main destination, and check both passports. Each should have been issued within the last ten years and stay valid well beyond the trip; the German checklist asks for at least three months after return.[7]
- Seven weeks before: book both visa appointments, ideally on the same day at the same centre.
- Two or three days before the appointments: book the flight reservation in both names, plus the hotel booking. Ours last up to two weeks, though the airline fixes the precise hold, so an earlier booking only wastes time.
- Appointment day: submit two complete files, each with its own copy of the reservation.
- Once both visas are back: buy the real flights for the dates the visas allow, and pay for the hotels.
For the UK, GOV.UK opens applications three months before the trip and normally decides in roughly three weeks.[8] If your honeymoon is in late December, apply in October, not in the week after the wedding.
Watch the season: appointment slots for Europe fill quickly around the winter wedding season in India. If you see slots, take them; you can book the reservation later, closer to the date.
Names after the wedding
Many brides plan to change their surname but have not done so yet when the visa application is due. That is fine. The reservation, the application form and the hotel booking should all carry the name in the passport you are submitting. Getting a new passport between the appointment and the trip creates more problems than it solves, because the visa sits in the old passport.
We suggest leaving any passport change until after the honeymoon. If you have already changed it, use the new passport throughout and make sure the reservation matches it. Our guide for couples covers shared bookings, name formats and what to do when only one partner needs a visa.

Two-country honeymoons: Europe plus an island
A popular pattern is a week in Europe followed by a few nights somewhere warm, often via a Gulf hub. Visa logic applies to each leg separately.
Say you fly Delhi to Paris, spend a week in France and Switzerland, then fly Zurich to Malé via Dubai and home to Delhi. For the Schengen application, the reservation needs to show you arriving in Paris and leaving the Schengen area from Zurich. That exit flight is the piece the consulate cares about most. A multi-city reservation covering the whole loop does the job; multi-city bookings are charged for each pair of legs, listed on the price page.
For the Maldives leg, the airline will want to see that you leave Malé. Once your Schengen visas are granted, buy the real tickets for the full route, including the return from Malé, and book the resort with payment. If your route changes through a hub, check whether you need anything for the transit; our transit guide explains how airlines look at connections.
How to book a honeymoon flight reservation
- Decide whether your trip needs a visa before travel. If not, you probably do not need a reservation at all.
- Enter both travellers on our booking form, names exactly as in each passport.
- Choose the route and dates that match both application forms. For a multi-country trip, include the exit leg.
- Settle ₹699 or $9 for each of you through Razorpay (UPI, cards or netbanking).
- Open the PDF that lands in your inbox roughly ten minutes later, then enter the booking code on the airline's own retrieval page. Stuck? Follow our PNR check walkthrough.
- Track or query the order at any time from our tracking page.
Need hotel proof too? Our visa hotel reservations are charged per stay for each guest. For Schengen, many checklists want accommodation for every night, so cover the whole stay.
Applying for a honeymoon visa?
Both of you on a single live booking reference. ₹699 / $9 per head.
Honeymoon mistakes we see
- Using a reservation to fly to the Maldives or Bali. These entries look for a return ticket, and the Maldives says "confirmed". Buy the real one.
- Booking the resort as a hold when the Maldives asks for a prepaid confirmed booking.
- One partner's passport running short. Bali wants six months; Schengen wants three months beyond return.
- Applying to the wrong Schengen consulate for the nights you have booked.
- Forgetting the TDAC or IMUGA declaration because the trip was booked months ago.
- Buying non-refundable flights before both visas are granted.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a dummy ticket for a Maldives honeymoon?
Not for a visa, because Maldives Immigration grants tourist visas on arrival. At the border, the official page asks for confirmed return journey tickets and a prepaid confirmed resort booking. A held reservation may not meet the "confirmed" wording, so buy your real return flight and pay for the resort before you travel.
Can we use one reservation for both our Schengen applications?
Yes, if you travel together on the same flights. Put both names on one reservation and include a copy in each file. Each of you still submits a separate application form, as the Visa Code requires, and each pays the visa fee.
When should we apply for a European honeymoon visa?
Schengen applications open six months before travel and should be in at least 15 days before. Decisions usually arrive within 15 days, occasionally taking up to 45. For a honeymoon shortly after the wedding, we would book appointments seven or eight weeks ahead to leave room for delays.
Should the bride's ticket show her married surname?
Only if her passport already shows it. Every booking and form should match the passport you submit. If the passport still carries her maiden name, use that name everywhere and change the passport after the honeymoon.
Do we need an onward ticket for Thailand?
Under the visa exemption that began on 15 September 2026, the embassy wants to see you leaving within the 30 days. Officers may also ask about accommodation and funds. Buy your return before flying and keep it handy at check-in and on arrival.
Is a flight reservation enough for a UK honeymoon visa?
The UK does not require one. The Home Office rates bookings as weak evidence. Add one to show your dates if you like, though your energy belongs on finances, employment and ties at home, which carry more weight.
How much does a reservation for two cost?
We price per passenger: ₹699 each in India, so ₹1,398 for a couple, or $9 each elsewhere. One-way and return cost the same. With more stops, you pay for every pair of legs.

Worth repeating: our reservation is a held booking that nobody can board with. Visa and entry decisions belong to consulates, airlines and border officers alone.
