Mauritius splits visitors into three groups, and which group you fall into changes everything about the flight question. Indian passport holders need no visa at all. Some nationalities get a visa stamped on arrival. Others, including Pakistani and Bangladeshi citizens, must apply before they travel, and for them the Passport and Immigration Office asks for something unusual in official checklists: a reservation, not a ticket. This guide sets out who is in which group, quotes the official wording, and explains what airlines and immigration at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport look for when you land.

Who needs a visa for Mauritius?
The PIO publishes a country-by-country list with one of three outcomes:[2]
- No visa required. This includes India, the UAE, Malaysia, the Maldives, the UK and the US, among many others.
- Visa for sixty days on arrival. Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan are examples.
- Visa required prior to travel. Pakistan and Bangladesh are on this list, as are some other countries.
The list we could read is dated 22 June 2022, so treat it as the starting point and confirm on the PIO site or with the nearest Mauritian mission before you book. Whatever group you are in, the PIO is clear that permission to travel is not the same as permission to enter: "The final decision to admit a non-citizen rests with the Immigration Officer after examination at the point of entry."[1]
For Indian travellers, that means no visa form and no consulate visit. It does not mean no paperwork. You still need to satisfy the officer on arrival, and the airline before that.
What documents does Mauritius ask for?
The answer depends on your group.
If you need a visa before travel, the PIO's application page lists the file:[3]
- Visa application form, filled in and signed.
- Two recent passport-size photos and a copy of your passport's data pages.
- A copy of your residence permit, if you don't live in your country of citizenship.
- "Copy of reservation passage ticket to country of origin or residence."
- A copy of your bank statement for the last month.
- A hotel reservation, with the hotel's name, phone number and email.
- Passport copies for anyone travelling with you, plus extra papers for business, conference, social or minor applicants.
The PIO wants applications in a month or more ahead of the trip, and visas are issued, as far as practicable, within twelve working days of a complete application.[3] You apply through a Mauritian embassy or consulate; where there is none, through Air Mauritius offices, and failing both, by email to the PIO.[3]
If you need no visa, or get one on arrival, the checks happen at the airport. The Australian High Commission in Port Louis, relaying the PIO's conditions, lists a valid travel document, "a valid onward or return passage ticket", proof of adequate funds, and your hotel name and booking confirmation, or the name, address and phone number of the family or friends you are staying with.[5]
What does the PIO say about flight tickets?
Here are the two wordings side by side:
- Visa application (PIO): "Copy of reservation passage ticket to country of origin or residence."[3]
- Entry on arrival (Australian High Commission, relaying PIO conditions): "You must hold a valid onward or return passage ticket". It adds: "The duration of stay granted upon arrival is subject to the period mentioned on your air ticket or according to your funds."[5]
The first wording is good news for anyone applying in advance. The PIO itself uses the word "reservation", so a genuine flight reservation back to your home or residence country matches the checklist. The hotel line uses "reservation" too.
The second wording is about the day you fly. Holding "a valid onward or return passage ticket" when you land is a different matter, and the length of stay you are given can follow the date on that ticket. By then you should have bought the real flight.
How we'd use it: for a Mauritius visa application, a verifiable reservation fits the PIO's own wording. For the journey itself, Indian visitors included, travel with a paid return or onward ticket, because the airline and the immigration officer can both ask for it.
What happens at check-in and on arrival?
Expect the airline to check first. Carriers screen documents against IATA's Timatic database, which they use to avoid fines and return costs for passengers refused entry.[7] A one-way booking to Mauritius is the classic trigger for a question at the counter. The PIO also warns that travellers arriving without a required visa "may be repatriated to their country of origin or residence at the transporting carrier's cost", which explains why airlines are careful.[1]
At the airport in Mauritius, the immigration officer "decides how long the person can stay for any particular visit".[1] Have your return ticket, accommodation details and a card or statement showing funds ready. Complete the All-in-One Travel Digital Form before you fly; the PIO site points to it on the Safe Mauritius portal.[1][6]
Here is an illustration. Say you are flying from Mumbai for ten days, staying with a cousin in Curepipe. Bring your return ticket, your cousin's full address and phone number, and a recent bank statement. If you planned twelve days but your ticket shows ten, expect the stamp to match the ticket, not your intentions.

When a flight reservation is the right document
Mauritius is one of the clearer cases. A reservation fits well in these situations:
- A pre-travel visa application. The PIO asks for a "reservation passage ticket" back to your home or residence country. Booking a paid fare before the visa decision is not needed.
- A Gulf resident applying from Dubai, Riyadh or Doha. If your nationality needs a visa, the reservation should return to your country of residence, and you add your residence permit to the file.[3]
- A combined trip. If you are adding Mauritius to a South Africa or Schengen trip and that consulate wants the full route, a reservation can cover the Mauritius legs.
And where it is not: boarding the flight, and the arrival desk. Once your visa is granted, or if you're Indian and need none, buy the real ticket. Gulf residents, families and children
For Gulf residents whose nationality needs a visa, the PIO checklist asks for a copy of your residence permit and a reservation back to your "country of origin or residence".[3] For most residents that means a return to the Gulf city you live in, not to your home country. Keep the residence permit comfortably valid beyond your trip, since an airline may question one that expires soon after.
Children have their own items on the list. For a minor, the PIO asks for a consent letter from the parents, a copy of the child's birth certificate and copies of the parents' passports.[3] Applicants with someone travelling alongside them also add a copy of that person's passport.
Example: a Bangladeshi engineer living in Dubai, travelling with his wife and their eight-year-old. The file would hold three forms and sets of photos, his residence permit, the reservation Dubai to Mauritius and back for all three names, a hotel reservation, his last month's bank statement, and the consent letter and birth certificate for the child.
Routes to Mauritius and transit visas on the way
Mauritius is reached from India either on direct services or through hubs such as Dubai, and from the Gulf by direct flights or one connection. From Pakistan and Bangladesh, most journeys involve a Gulf or other hub. Airlines change their schedules often, so check the current options with them.
A connection becomes a visa question when you leave the airport. Applying for a Mauritius visa before travel, step by step
- Confirm your group on the PIO country list or with the Mauritian mission.[2]
- Find where to apply: a Mauritian embassy or consulate; else Air Mauritius; else the PIO by email.[3]
- Reserve your flight back to your home or residence country, names exactly as in the passport.
- Reserve your hotel, noting the name, phone and email the PIO asks for.
- Collect the rest: form, photos, passport copy, residence permit if relevant, last month's bank statement.
- Apply at least a month ahead. The PIO aims to issue within twelve working days.[3]
- Once granted, buy your real return ticket and confirm your accommodation.
- Before flying, complete the All-in-One Travel Digital Form.
Errors that cause trouble for Mauritius trips
- Relying on an old country list. Requirements change; confirm yours before booking.
- A return reservation to the wrong country. The PIO wants travel back to your origin or residence country.
- Flying on a reservation. On arrival you need a valid onward or return ticket.
- A ticket shorter than the stay you want. The officer can match your stay to the ticket.
- Missing host details. Staying with family? Bring their full name, address and phone number.
- Overstaying. The PIO treats it as an offence; extensions are applied for in Mauritius.[4]
