Qatar Airways Dummy Ticket: Retrieving It, Holding a Fare and Using It for a Visa

A Qatar Airways dummy ticket is an unpaid reservation held on Qatar Airways, identified by a six-character booking reference (PNR). Anyone can retrieve it on qatarairways.com with that reference and the passenger's last name. Visa checklists that want a flight reservation are its natural home; a "paid ticket" requirement is not.

Qatar Airways reservations land on our desk mostly from travellers heading to Europe, the UK or North America through Doha, and from people visiting Qatar itself. The airline publishes more detail than most about how its booking lookup works, how long it will hold a fare and how far a misspelt name can be fixed. We read those pages again in October 2026. Below is what they say, what it means for a visa application, and where a reservation stops being enough.

Qatar Airways booking: key facts

TopicWhat Qatar Airways or the official source says
Lookup detailsBooking reference (PNR) or e-ticket number, plus last name, on the "Manage booking" page.[1]
Booking reference formatSix alphanumeric characters, for example B8XYZ6. Valid characters are A to Z and 1 to 9.[1]
E-ticket numberA 13-digit number such as 1572345679876, only created once a ticket is issued.[1]
Paid fare hold"Hold my booking" for 24, 48 or 72 hours, for a non-refundable fee that varies by region.[2]
Name correctionsLimited to three characters across first name, last name and spaces; more needs proof of identity.[3]
Entering QatarRules depend on nationality; some routes need a Discover Qatar hotel booking or a confirmed round ticket.[5]

What exactly is a Qatar Airways reservation without a ticket?

It is the booking record on its own. When seats are held, Qatar Airways' system stores the passenger names, the flights and a booking reference. Pay for it and a second identifier appears: a 13-digit e-ticket number. Qatar Airways' own lookup page separates the two clearly, and that split is the whole story of a visa reservation.[1] You have the booking reference. You do not have an e-ticket number, because no ticket has been bought.

For most visa files that is exactly the right document. EU guidance on Schengen applications treats travel bookings as supporting evidence, and the Dutch checklist spells out that buying is unnecessary.[6][7] The US State Department goes further and suggests you avoid buying tickets until a visa is issued.[9] In those cases a held Qatar Airways booking lets you show the trip without spending the fare.

How do you retrieve a Qatar Airways booking?

The quickest way is the "Manage booking" page on qatarairways.com, also reachable through "My Trips" in the app. With a reservation you will only have the first.[1]

  1. Open qatarairways.com and choose Manage booking.
  2. Pick the option to retrieve with a booking reference (PNR).
  3. Enter the six characters. Qatar Airways says valid references use the letters A to Z and the numbers 1 to 9, so a character that looks like a zero is almost certainly the letter O.[1]
  4. Type the last name using letters only. The airline's form rejects digits and symbols in the surname field.[3]
  5. Compare what loads with your visa form: every traveller, each flight, the dates and the Doha connection.

Do this once when the reservation reaches you and once more the night before your appointment. It takes two minutes and saves the most awkward conversation at a visa counter. If the lookup fails, our guide to checking a PNR on an airline website lists the usual causes, and our Qatar Airways verification walkthrough shows the screens step by step.

Tip from the desk: that rule about valid characters is useful. Qatar Airways states its references contain the numbers 1 to 9, which means no zero.[1] When a reference "doesn't work", a misread O or 0 is the first thing we check.

How strict is Qatar Airways about names?

Strict enough that you should treat spelling as final. Qatar Airways' name correction page limits a correction to three characters in total, counting the first name, last name and the spaces between letters. A bigger correction needs proof of identification, which the airline reviews before replying.[3] The fields only accept Latin letters and spaces.

What does that mean for a visa reservation? Enter the name exactly as your passport's machine-readable line shows it. Suppose your passport says "PRIYANKA RAJESHKUMAR PATEL". A reservation for "Priyanka Patel" is the same person, but it is no longer an exact match, and officers compare names. If a family member's passport has only one name, mention it when booking so the record is created correctly from the start.

Can you hold a Qatar Airways fare yourself?

Yes, though you pay for the privilege. Qatar Airways' "Hold my booking" option sits on the review page after you choose flights. Depending on how far away departure is, you can hold for 24, 48 or 72 hours.[2] The key terms, from the US version of the page:

  • The fee depends on your region and the length of the hold.
  • It is non-refundable and is not deducted from the ticket price.
  • The booking is cancelled if you do not pay within the window you chose.
  • It covers Qatar Airways marketed flights, but not flights from Brazil or some itineraries with partner-operated sectors.
  • It is not offered on Award bookings, and may be withdrawn for some origins during sales.
  • You must complete payment a set time before departure: three days for the United States, two for Qatar and four for most other countries on the page we read.

Our take: Hold my booking is designed for someone who has nearly decided to buy. For a visa file it has two weaknesses. The longest hold is three days, and you pay a fee you never get back even if you do buy later. If your appointment is tomorrow and you want Qatar Airways specifically, it can still be a reasonable choice.

If your trip includes the United States

Carriers on US routes must offer one of two protections for a day after booking: keep the quoted fare without paying, or cancel free of charge. It applies when you book at least one week before the flight.[4] The airline decides which of the two it offers, so read the conditions on screen when you book a US flight.

Going to Qatar itself: what do officials ask about flights?

It depends on your passport, and Qatar's tourism authority publishes an eligibility tool rather than one rule. On the Visit Qatar visas page, some nationalities enter visa-free, others apply for a Hayya e-visa, and others can get a visa on arrival.[5] For several of the visa-on-arrival routes, including the one offered to Indian passport holders, the tool says you must book a Discover Qatar hotel before you travel, or apply for a Hayya A2 visa in advance instead.[5] For at least one visa-on-arrival category it states that a confirmed round ticket is required, with a passport valid for at least three months.[5]

Where "confirmed round ticket" is the wording, a held reservation may not satisfy it. You would be wise to travel on a purchased return ticket. We cover the Indian route in detail, including Hayya and the hotel rule, in Qatar visa for Indians. For a short stop in Doha on the way somewhere else, dummy ticket for transit visa and onward ticket rules for layovers are the better reads.

Visa routes where Qatar Airways reservations often appear

Doha connects a lot of South Asia, Africa and the Gulf to Europe, the UK and North America, so these are the files we see most:

  • Schengen: EU guidance counts a reservation as supporting evidence, and Dutch consulates confirm no purchase is needed.[6][7] Read your own consulate's list, since a few ask for more. See dummy ticket for Schengen visa.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK puts flight bookings, other than for transit, in its "less useful" pile.[8] A reservation is optional for a UK visitor file; see dummy ticket for UK visa.
  • United States: don't buy before the visa is issued, says the State Department.[9]
  • Qatar: depends on nationality; some routes need a hotel through Discover Qatar or a confirmed round ticket.[5]

Where Qatar Airways reservations go wrong

The airline is rarely the problem. The details around it usually are:

  • Short names. With a three-character correction limit, a missing middle name can't always be fixed quickly.[3]
  • A stale hold. Something booked a fortnight early may have expired before the officer checks. Book close to the appointment.
  • Dates out of step with your hotel, insurance and leave letter. The Doha connection can put arrival a day after departure; your hotel booking should start on the arrival date.
  • Wrong document for the job. A reservation offered where the wording says confirmed or paid ticket.
  • Labelling it a ticket anywhere in your application. "Flight reservation" is the honest term.
  • Invented PDFs. Templates with a code that does not exist in any airline system. We do not make fake or edited tickets, and you shouldn't use one.

Qatar Airways reservation FAQ

How do I verify a Qatar Airways dummy ticket?

Go to Manage booking on qatarairways.com, choose to retrieve with a booking reference, then enter the six-character PNR and the passenger's last name in letters only. A genuine held booking will load with the names and flights. If it doesn't, check for an O typed as a zero; Qatar Airways references use the numbers 1 to 9 only.

Can I retrieve a reservation with an e-ticket number?

Not a reservation. Qatar Airways allows lookups by e-ticket number, but that 13-digit number only exists once a ticket has been bought.

How much does Qatar Airways Hold my booking cost?

Qatar Airways does not publish one fee. Its page says the charge depends on your region and on whether you hold for 24, 48 or 72 hours. The fee is non-refundable and is not taken off the fare if you buy. You will see the exact amount on the booking page before paying it.

What if my name is wrong on a Qatar Airways reservation?

Qatar Airways limits name corrections to three characters across the first name, last name and spaces, and asks for proof of identity for anything larger. On a visa reservation, the simpler route is usually a fresh booking with the correct passport spelling. Check every letter before you pay.

Does Qatar need a return ticket from visitors?

It depends on nationality. The Visit Qatar eligibility tool lists visa-free entry for some passports and visa on arrival or a Hayya e-visa for others. Some visa-on-arrival routes need a Discover Qatar hotel booking, and at least one states that a confirmed round ticket is required. In that case a held reservation may not be enough.

Is a Qatar Airways reservation accepted for a Schengen visa?

Most Schengen checklists phrase it as a reservation or an itinerary; few insist on payment, and the Dutch government says so in writing. A genuine Qatar Airways reservation fits that request. The decision still rests with the consulate, and a few checklists ask for more, so read the one for your visa centre.

When should I book my Qatar Airways reservation?

Two or three days before your appointment works well for most people. The reservation should still be live when your file is opened. Booking weeks ahead risks the hold lapsing first. If the appointment is moved, get a new reservation rather than submitting an old one.
