Etihad Dummy Ticket: Looking It Up, Getting Names Right and Abu Dhabi Visa Rules

Etihad comes up on our desk in two ways. Travellers flying through Abu Dhabi to Europe, the UK or North America want the reservation to show the routing they actually plan. Others are visiting the UAE and want to know whether Etihad can help with their visa. Etihad's own help pages answer a lot of this directly, and some of the answers are stricter than people expect. We went through them again in October 2026.

Etihad booking and visa: key facts

What does an Etihad reservation prove to a visa officer?

It proves you have a concrete travel plan: named passengers, real flights and fixed dates, all sitting in Etihad's booking system under one reference. It does not prove you have paid. That distinction is the right one for most applications. EU guidance on Schengen visas counts travel bookings among the supporting papers, while the Dutch checklist confirms no purchase is required.^[7][8] Across the Atlantic, America's State Department tells applicants not to purchase flights until a decision is made.^[10]

Why Etihad specifically? Often because the real trip routes through Abu Dhabi, and you want the plan you show to be the plan you intend to fly. That consistency matters more than any airline's name on the page.

How do you look up an Etihad booking?

Through Manage on etihad.com. Etihad's FAQ says you enter your trip reference or ticket number together with your last name, and from there you can see the flight details.^[1] Etihad's seat-selection answer confirms that a booking reference and last name are enough, with no login required.^[1]

1. Visit etihad.com and open Manage.
2. Enter the booking reference from your reservation PDF. You will not have a ticket number, because nothing has been bought.
3. Enter the last name in the same form used on the booking, without hyphens or apostrophes if your surname has them (see the name section below).
4. Check passengers, flight numbers, the Abu Dhabi connection and dates against your visa form.
5. Repeat the check on the evening before your appointment.

Etihad notes that people who booked through a travel agent still get key services through Manage, but must speak to the agent to change the booking itself.^[1] For a reservation from us, that means any change to dates or names comes through us, not Etihad. Etihad's name rules, and why a reservation must be right first time

Etihad publishes unusually detailed name guidelines. The headline is blunt: government passenger-data rules mean you must enter your name as it appears in your passport, or you may not be permitted to fly.^[3] The specifics are worth knowing:

• Given names (first and middle) go in the first-name field, family name in the last-name field.^[3]
• Hyphens and apostrophes in surnames are replaced with a space.^[3]
• A single-letter surname is entered twice in the last-name field.^[3]
• No family name in the passport? Etihad's instruction is to move the given name into the surname box and write FNU, short for first name unknown, where the first name would go.^[3]
• Whole name on one line? Read the machine-readable zone at the bottom of the passport page; the surname follows the country code.^[3]

Here is the part that matters for a reservation. Etihad's modification guide says genuine typing errors of up to three characters can be fixed free on a ticket, but that name corrections are not possible on bookings where tickets have not yet been issued.^[2] Its examples of changes that carry a fee include expanding "MOHD" to "MOHAMMED" and adding a forgotten middle name.^[2] So if a name is wrong on an unpaid reservation, the fix is a new booking. Check spellings on our form before paying, and you avoid the whole problem.

Example: a passport reads given names "SAMINTHA NIRMANI", surname "AMARASINGHE". Etihad's own sample shows exactly that split.^[3] Enter it the same way on any reservation, and the name on the PDF will match the one the officer sees in your passport.

Can you hold an Etihad fare without paying?

On the Etihad pages we read in October 2026, we did not find a general paid or free fare-hold product like the ones some other Gulf carriers advertise. What Etihad does publish is a US-specific rule: if you book at least 7 days before departure, you may cancel within 24 hours for a full refund.^[5] That reflects the US regulation requiring airlines on US routes to offer either a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare or a 24-hour penalty-free cancellation.^[6] Etihad's refund FAQ adds that unused extras bought in the same transaction are refunded too in that case.^[1]

For a visa file that rarely helps. You still pay the full fare up front, and only 24 hours to back out. If you only need to show a plan, a held reservation does the job without the outlay. If the visa is granted and you then buy, check the fare conditions; Etihad's FAQ notes that changes and cancellations follow the fare you buy.^[1]

Reservation, US 24-hour cancellation or a refundable fare?

Etihad's UAE transit visa: where a reservation falls short

Etihad currently offers only one visa through its own channel: a single-entry transit visa for 48 or 96 hours.^[4] The conditions on its visa page are specific:

• Ticket: "a confirmed ticket to Abu Dhabi and onward to a third destination".^[4]
• Fees: AED 55 for 48 hours, AED 216 for 96 hours; application fees are non-refundable.^[4]
• Validity: entry within 30 days of issue.^[4]
• Passport: valid for six months at the time of travel.^[4]
• Processing: about four business days; track after five.^[4]
• Staying over 24 hours: a confirmed hotel reservation, or the Emirates ID and residence visa copy of the person you stay with.^[4]

The word "confirmed" is doing real work there. A held reservation may not satisfy a request for a confirmed ticket, so for this particular visa we'd tell you to buy the ticket, preferably a refundable one. Planning a longer stop instead? Etihad's stopover programme offers up to two free nights in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain for travellers on a return Etihad booking with a stop of 24 hours to four days. What your Etihad reservation looks like

The document carries every traveller's name, each flight with times and the Abu Dhabi connection, and the booking reference to try at etihad.com/manage. It is clearly marked as a reservation, not a ticket.

If you'd like Etihad, write it in the booking notes. That preference guides where we hold the seat. Should the specific flight refuse a hold, we switch to the next workable departure on that route and day, and your PDF shows which carrier it ended up on.

Small errors that cause big delays

• A hyphenated surname typed with the hyphen. Etihad's own rule is a space.^[3] Follow it so the lookup works.
• Middle name missing. On an unpaid booking it cannot be corrected; you need a new one.^[2]
• Booking far too early. By the time the file is opened, the hold may be gone. We'd order it two days or so ahead of the appointment.
• A routing that doesn't match the story. If your hotel is in Paris but the reservation lands in Rome, expect questions.
• Using a reservation where "confirmed ticket" is required, such as Etihad's transit visa.
• Describing it as a ticket. Your forms should say "flight reservation", never "ticket".
• Fabricated documents. A PDF with an invented code is a false document. We only issue genuine reservations.

How to order an Etihad reservation and what it costs

What you receive is an Etihad, or comparable, booking held under your passport name, with the airline PNR on a PDF. It is unpaid, so it won't get you onto a plane.

Pricing works per head and doesn't change between single and return journeys; multi-city bookings add a charge for each pair of legs. Razorpay takes UPI, card or netbanking. Allow about ten minutes for the email. Because the hold window appears on screen before payment, order with your appointment date in front of you.
