Most people booking a holiday abroad hit the same wall: the visa form wants travel dates, the travel agent wants payment, and nobody wants to pay for flights that might be wasted if the visa is refused. The good news is that the official tourist checklists for the big destinations rarely ask you to pay first. The less good news is that they do not all say the same thing. We read the holiday-visa pages published by Schengen missions, the British and American governments, IRCC, Australia's Home Affairs and the UAE authorities. Below is what each one says about flights, in its own words, with links. We use Indian passport holders as the running example, because all six need a visa or entry permit for Indian citizens; other passports may be visa-free for some of them.
Tourist visa flight requirements: key facts
| Destination | Flight wording on the official tourist page |
|---|---|
| Schengen (Netherlands) | "You do not need a paid travel ticket"; a reservation in your name or another document showing travel plans.[1] |
| Schengen (Germany, India) | "Flight reservation"; a booked ticket brings no faster processing.[2] |
| Schengen (Spain, Mumbai) | "Flight bookings (roundtrip)", with advice to hold off buying until the visa is granted.[3] |
| United Kingdom | "Flight bookings (unless transiting)" are on the list of less useful documents.[5] |
| United States | Wait for the visa before you "buy tickets", says the State Department.[7] |
| Canada | Suggests including "flight details" among documents about your stay.[8] |
| Australia | No flight document listed; asks for "your plans while in Australia".[9] |
| UAE | GDRFA asks for an onward ticket or "a ticket to leave UAE".[11] |
Do you need to buy a flight ticket for a tourist visa?
Not for Schengen, Britain, America, Canada or Australia, going by what those governments publish. Three of them go further and tell you not to buy early, or that buying early gains you nothing. The UAE is the outlier, because its tourist visas are usually issued through a sponsor such as an airline, hotel or tour operator, and the official requirement is phrased as a ticket.
For a holiday, then, start with a checkable reservation for your intended dates, and buy the real fare after the visa is stamped. Where the wording says ticket, treat it as a ticket.
Schengen tourist visa: reservation, not purchase
Schengen is where the most people ask this question, and the answer is consistent across the missions we checked. For holidays, the Dutch checklist asks for a booking, made out to you, for getting into and back out of the zone (or other proof of your plans), and it rules out any need to pay for the ticket first.[1] It also asks for proof of any organised tour booking and, if you hire a car, the licence and rental agreement.[1]
- Germany (India): the tourism checklist lists "Flight reservation" as a numbered item and adds that buying a ticket brings no quicker handling.[2]
- Spain (Mumbai, via BLS): "Flight bookings (roundtrip)" plus internal travel reservations, with a recommendation not to purchase the air ticket before the visa comes through.[3]
The EU window for applying opens six months before departure and closes 15 days before it. Most decisions arrive within 15 days; a few take up to 45.[4] Our dedicated Schengen visa guide compares a dozen consulate checklists, and the multiple-countries guide helps when your holiday crosses borders.
UK tourist visa: the flight booking barely counts
The Home Office is unusually frank here. Its supporting-documents guide names several kinds of paperwork that carry little weight for visitors, and "flight bookings (unless transiting)" is one, next to hotel bookings and travel insurance.[5] A UK caseworker is looking at your finances, your job or studies, your travel history and your reasons to come home.
The visitor visa fee is £135 for a stay of up to six months, and you may apply up to three months ahead of your trip.[6] If you like to have your dates on paper, a reservation will not hurt, but spending money on a non-refundable fare to "strengthen" a UK application is wasted effort. We compare the two approaches in UK versus Schengen flight bookings.
US B-2 tourist visa: dates, not tickets
The State Department's visitor visa page tells you, without hedging, to wait for the visa before buying tickets or locking in final plans.[7] B-2 covers tourism, including holidays and visits to friends or relatives.[7] The decision is made at the interview. The DS-160 asks when you intend to arrive and how long you will stay, so have a plan you can explain. A reservation is optional; some people like to carry one so the dates are clear in their own mind. Our USA visa guide covers the rest of the file.
Canada visitor visa: flight details help
Canada's immigration department recommends adding paperwork that shows the length and plan of your stay, giving "flight details" and accommodation proof as examples.[8] When you apply online, the portal generates a personalised checklist, and IRCC asks you to provide everything listed on it.[8] The fee is CAN$100 per person, or CAN$500 for a family of five or more, plus CAN$85 for biometrics.[8]
Of the six destinations, Canada is where a reservation does the most useful work, because the officer reads the file without an interview and the flight details anchor your stated dates. Keep the trip length realistic for your leave and funds. See our Canada visa guide.
Australia tourist visa: plans, not bookings
The Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream allows stays of up to 12 months for holidays, cruises and visits to family or friends.[9] Under "Genuine visitor documents" it suggests money evidence, a relative's or friend's invitation where relevant, "your plans while in Australia" and signs that you will go home, like a job letter or property you own.[9] There is no line asking for a flight reservation.
That does not mean you cannot include one. If your plans are a fixed 14-day itinerary, a reservation is a tidy way to show the dates. But do not hold up an Australian application for want of a booking. Our Australia visa guide has more.
UAE tourist visa: where a ticket is written in
The UAE is the exception on this list. Among the conditions for GDRFA Dubai's single-entry tourist visa are a ticket to continue your journey or "a ticket to leave UAE", medical insurance valid in the UAE, and a passport with six months of validity.[11] For the five-year multiple-entry tourist visa, the portal wants a ticket for an onward or return journey, a US$4,000 bank balance (or equivalent) across the last six months, and health cover valid for 180 days.[10]
How you apply also shapes the answer. The official portal explains that licensed travel agents and hotels can arrange a tourist visa "provided you purchase the ticket through them", and that airlines arrange visas for passengers flying with them.[10] Emirates, for instance, limits its visa service to travellers holding an Emirates ticket that "has already been issued".[12] In those routes a held reservation from anyone else will not do the job, and we would not pretend otherwise.
One route avoids the pre-arranged visa: Indian passport holders who have American permanent residence (a green card), or a residence visa from Britain or an EU state, can get a 14-day visa on arrival in Dubai under GDRFA rules.[13] Airlines may still ask about your return flight at check-in. Our Dubai and UAE visa guide covers each route.

Why do embassies avoid asking for a paid ticket?
Because the visa may be refused or granted for different dates, and a consulate does not want applicants losing money on that. Germany says a paid ticket gets no faster processing; Spain and the US say not to buy one at all before the decision. A reservation does the one job the officer needs: it shows a dated plan to enter and leave. What actually persuades an officer about a holiday is elsewhere in the file: money, employment, previous travel, and a trip length that fits your leave.
Applying from Dubai, Riyadh or London instead of India?
Then the trip starts and ends where you live, and the reservation should show that. An Indian engineer living in Dubai applying for a Schengen holiday applies in the UAE, and the officer expects a round trip from Dubai, not from Delhi. The same logic holds for the UK and Canada: your return flight is evidence that you are going back to your job and residence permit, so it should point there.
Residence also changes what you may need. Some missions in the Gulf ask that your residence permit stays valid for a set period after the trip, and the period differs by country. And as noted above, Indian citizens with that kind of US, UK or EU residence status have a visa-on-arrival route into Dubai that others do not. Read the checklist issued for your country of residence, not the one a friend used back home.
What should a tourist flight reservation show?
- Arrival and departure dates that match the application form and your hotel bookings, night for night.
- A trip length that fits your leave letter. Ten days of approved leave and a 24-day reservation is a mismatch the officer will notice.
- A route home to where you live, which for Gulf residents means the Gulf city, not India.
- Internal legs on multi-country trips, as Spain's checklist asks.[3]
- Every traveller named exactly as in the passport, including children.
- A live PNR, so anyone can confirm it on the airline's website.
Say you have leave from 2 to 13 December and plan Paris, then Amsterdam. A reservation Mumbai to Paris on 3 December, a train or flight to Amsterdam on 8 December, and Amsterdam to Mumbai on 12 December matches your leave with a day spare at each end. France is your main destination at five nights, so that is where you apply.
Reservation, refundable fare or paid ticket: which to use?
| Option | Cost if visa refused | Fits wording like | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verifiable flight reservation | Only the reservation fee | "Reservation", "booking", "flight details", "itinerary" | Temporary hold; book close to the appointment |
| Refundable airline fare | Refund minus any fees, after a wait | "Ticket", "confirmed ticket" | Refund rules vary; read them before buying |
| Non-refundable ticket | Usually the full fare | Any wording | Money at risk; often discouraged by consulates |
| Ticket bought via UAE sponsor | Depends on sponsor's terms | Airline or agency-sponsored UAE visas | Must be with that airline or agent |
Step by step: the flight part of a tourist application
- Download your checklist from the embassy or its visa centre for where you live.
- Find the flight line and note the exact word used.
- Fix your leave and your route before booking anything.
- Book hotels that match the nights; a hotel booking for visa is available if you need one.
- Order the reservation a couple of days before the appointment.
- Verify the PNR using our step-by-step verification guide.
- After approval, buy the real ticket for dates inside the visa's validity.
Getting a reservation for your holiday visa
Every reservation we issue has a live PNR you can open on the carrier's website yourself. It is a reservation only; nobody can board a plane with it. How long the hold lasts is displayed before you pay.
Each price covers one passenger for a one-way or round trip, with multi-city charged per pair of legs. You will get it by email in about 10 minutes; we accept UPI, cards and netbanking via Razorpay. The price page lists everything, and flight reservation for visa explains how it differs from a ticket.
Planning a holiday visa application?
Verifiable reservation, your names and dates. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Please note: a reservation does not guarantee a visa. If your checklist asks for a paid or confirmed ticket, follow the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a tourist visa without a flight booking?
For some destinations, yes. Australia's Tourist stream lists no flight document, and the UK treats flight bookings as less useful evidence. The US decides at interview. Schengen checklists usually ask for a reservation or another document showing your travel plans, and the UAE asks for a ticket. Check your own checklist rather than assuming.
Will a reservation be checked by the embassy?
No consulate publishes its verification method. Still, a genuine PNR opens on the airline's "Manage booking" page with just the reference and your surname. That is why we only issue live bookings. A made-up PDF fails that lookup and can count as a false document, which causes far bigger problems than a missing booking.
What if my visa dates differ from my plan?
Fit the actual trip to the visa you received. Buy your actual ticket for dates inside its validity and the number of days allowed. If the visa cannot be used at all, for example because its validity starts after your planned flights, Netherlands Worldwide tells applicants in India to contact the Dutch embassy in New Delhi quickly.[14]
Should a family holiday be on one reservation?
Yes, ideally. One booking listing every traveller, including children, makes it obvious that you are travelling together. Separate reservations with slightly different flights can look like separate trips, which invites questions you do not need. Our guide to reservations for several passengers covers names and infants.
Is it worth paying for a refundable fare instead?
Only where the wording asks for a ticket, as in the UAE, or where you are certain of the dates and the refund terms are good. Refundable fares often cost more and refunds can take weeks. For a Schengen, UK, US, Canadian or Australian tourist application, a reservation is enough wherever the checklist uses reservation-type wording.
How far ahead should the travel dates be?
Far enough to allow processing. For Schengen, apply at least 15 days before travel and expect up to 15 days for a decision, longer in some cases. Britain accepts applications up to three months before travel. Pick flight dates that leave room for the decision, then book the reservation shortly before your appointment.
Does the reservation have to be on a specific airline?
No official tourist checklist we reviewed names an airline, except where the UAE visa itself is arranged by the airline you fly. Choose a realistic direct or one-stop route that you would actually take, so the plan looks like a real holiday.
