Pilgrimage Travel and Visas: When a Flight Reservation Helps

Pilgrims ask us about flight bookings more than almost anyone. Our reply always starts with a question back: which pilgrimage? Hajj runs through government quotas and licensed operators who book the flights for you. Umrah can be a package or an independent trip. Jerusalem, Rome, Lourdes and Fatima are ordinary tourist visas with a religious purpose. Kailash Manasarovar and Kartarpur Sahib each have their own government process. Below, each route is explained from its official source, with our practical advice marked as such. Sources are listed at the end.

Pilgrimage travel: key facts by route

Do pilgrims need a dummy ticket at all?

For the two biggest pilgrimages from India, mostly not. Hajj flights are organised for you, and many Umrah packages include them. Where you plan the trip yourself and apply for a visa, the usual tourist-visa logic applies: the consulate wants to see when you arrive and when you leave, and a flight reservation shows that without you paying for a ticket before the visa is decided.

The cases where a reservation genuinely helps:

• A Schengen visa for Rome and the Vatican, Lourdes, Fatima or the Camino de Santiago.
• An Israel visa for a Holy Land trip you are arranging yourself.
• Umrah booked independently on a tourist visa, where you want the dates fixed before buying flights.
• Ziyarat in Iraq or Iran where you assemble flights and hotels yourself.

The cases where it does not: Hajj through any official channel, Kailash Manasarovar through the Ministry of External Affairs, Kartarpur Sahib, and any package where the operator issues the flights.

Hajj: why your flights come with the place

Hajj is quota-based. Every year India and Saudi Arabia sign a bilateral agreement fixing India's number of seats. Under the Haj Policy 2027, 70% of that quota goes to the Haj Committee of India and 30% to Haj Group Organisers, the licensed private operators.^[2] Committee pilgrims choose two embarkation points in order of preference from a list of 19 airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Calicut and Srinagar, and fly on air charter services arranged under the Ministry of Minority Affairs. The policy even reserves the right to move pilgrims to another embarkation point to keep charter operations viable.^[2]

For pilgrims from a list of countries it sets each year, mainly those with Muslim minorities, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah runs Nusuk Hajj. Its all-inclusive packages cover visa issuance, flights, accommodation in Makkah and Madinah, transport and Mashair services. The platform also states that registering "does not mean that you will be accepted for Hajj".^[1]

Saudi Arabia's tourist visa does not allow Hajj.^[5] So there is no route on which a pilgrim builds a Hajj visa file around a flight reservation they booked themselves. If someone offers you "Hajj on a visit visa with your own ticket", walk away.

Umrah in short

The Nusuk Umrah platform sells two kinds of package from the Ministry's authorised providers: comprehensive packages with the visa included, which can include flights, and packages without a visa for GCC citizens, residents and holders of other visa types, which cover accommodation, transport and meals.^[3]

Practical adviceIf your package includes flights, use the provider's itinerary and nothing else. If it doesn't, and you are entering on a tourist visa, a reservation lets you fix travel dates and book your Umrah permit slot to match before you pay for flights. Once the dates are settled, buy the ticket.

Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Land

Since January 2025, travellers from countries that are visa-exempt for Israel need an ETA-IL electronic travel authorisation before flying. Israel's Population and Immigration Authority says passports need three months of validity beyond arrival, visits run up to 90 days, and an approved ETA-IL lets you reach the border but is not itself permission to enter.^[6]

Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt for Israel and apply for a visa instead. Church groups often travel with a pilgrimage operator who prepares the group file. If you go independently, the embassy will want to see your travel plan, and a return flight reservation is the natural way to show it. Our Israel visa guide covers the application. Rome, Lourdes, Fatima and the Camino

Vatican City sits inside Rome, so a Vatican pilgrimage is in practice an Italian Schengen visa. Lourdes is in France, Fatima in Portugal, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. All four use the Schengen rules: apply to the main destination, between six months and 15 days before travel.^[7]

A typical parish group might spend four nights in Rome, two in Assisi and three in Lourdes. Italy has the most nights, so the group applies there, with the Lourdes leg shown as intra-Schengen travel. The flights home leave from France. That is a multi-city reservation: into Rome, out of Toulouse or Paris. Practical adviceWalking the Camino creates a specific problem: you don't know exactly which day you'll reach Santiago. Pick a realistic finish date, add a buffer day, and reserve the flight home from Santiago or Madrid for that date. State the walking plan in your cover letter so the officer understands why the dates have a margin.

Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

The government-run Yatra is organised by the Ministry of External Affairs with the Government of China. For 2026 it ran from June to August, with 10 batches of 50 yatris crossing at Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and 10 batches of 50 at Nathu La in Sikkim. Yatris were chosen by a computer-generated, random, gender-balanced draw, and registration closed on 19 May 2026.^[8]

There is no international flight in this route, so no flight reservation is involved. Applications open on kmy.gov.in each year, usually announced by an MEA press release. Kartarpur Sahib corridor

The Kartarpur corridor links Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan. Travel through it is visa-free. Pilgrims register online on the Ministry of Home Affairs portal, carry a valid passport, and Overseas Citizens of India carry their OCI card with their foreign passport. Confirmation comes by SMS and email a few days before the travel date.^[9] It is a land crossing, so flight documents play no part. Check the portal for whether registrations are open before planning around it.

Ziyarat in Iraq and Iran, and Buddhist sites in Nepal

Shia pilgrims travelling to Najaf and Karbala, or to Mashhad and Qom, often book flights and hotels themselves. That makes the visa file look much like a tourist application: passport, travel dates, accommodation. Our Iraq visa guide explains what the official channels ask for. Practical adviceDuring Arbaeen and other peak dates, flights into Najaf fill early and prices jump. A reservation can hold your intended dates for the visa file, but we'd buy the real ticket as soon as the visa is approved rather than wait.

Family and group pilgrimages: getting the details right

Pilgrimages are often family trips across three generations, and that is where small errors creep in. A grandmother's passport may carry a different spelling from her Aadhaar card, or a child may be travelling on a newly issued passport. The reservation has to follow the passport, letter for letter, for every traveller.

Practical adviceBefore you book anything, line up every passport on the table and copy the names exactly as printed on the data page, including middle names. Then check three things:

• Everyone on the same dates. If a son is flying back early for work, give him his own reservation and mention it in the cover letter.
• Religious dates inside the travel window. A Lourdes trip timed for a feast day, or an Umrah permit slot, should sit comfortably between your arrival and departure, not on the day you land.
• Passport validity for the oldest and youngest. Older travellers renew less often, and children's passports in India are valid for shorter periods. Saudi Arabia and Singapore, for example, both expect six months' validity.

Elderly pilgrims may also need wheelchair assistance on the real flight. That is requested from the airline once you buy the ticket, not at the reservation stage.

Reservation, package flights or nothing: a comparison

Planning a self-arranged pilgrimage, step by step

1. Confirm whether the trip is a package. If the operator books flights, stop here and use their papers.
2. Check the visa route for your passport: Saudi tourist or Umrah visa, Israel visa or ETA-IL, Schengen, Iraq.
3. Fix the religious dates first. Feast days, Umrah permit slots, Camino stages or Arbaeen set the frame; flights fit around them.
4. Order the reservation just before the appointment. Each reservation holds for up to 2 weeks, with the exact period set by the airline.
5. Match every document: names exactly as in passports, the same dates on hotel bookings, insurance and cover letter.

7. Pay for real seats after approval, keeping the dates unchanged.

Flight reservations for pilgrimage visas

Our reservations carry a live booking reference under each pilgrim's name, which the airline's site will display. No fare has been paid on them. Family groups are common for pilgrimages; each traveller is priced separately.

Every pilgrim pays one fixed fare for a one-way or round route; longer multi-city routings are charged by pairs of legs (price details). The email normally lands within about 10 minutes, and UPI, cards and netbanking all work. If the consulate also wants hotel bookings, see hotel booking for visa.
