Iraq changed its visa system recently, and a lot of older advice online is now wrong. Visitors can no longer pick up a visit visa on arrival in federal Iraq; the British government's travel advice says so directly and points travellers to the e-visa portal instead.[2] For Indian travellers there is a second layer that most visa articles skip: Iraq is on India's list of Emigration Check Required countries, and India's own rules ask ECR passport holders going there on a visit to carry a return ticket. This guide covers both sides, plus the Kurdistan Region, and is honest about where a held reservation fits and where it does not.
Iraq visa key facts
| Question | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Official portal | evisa.iq, run by Iraq's Ministry of Interior (Directorate of Civil Status, Passports and Residency).[1] |
| What the e-visa is | "Valid for 30 days and available for single or multiple entry"; you need a valid passport and a digital photo with a white background; the visa arrives by email and you print it for border control.[1] |
| Visa on arrival | No longer available for visit visas in federal Iraq, according to GOV.UK.[2] |
| Return ticket at Iraqi entry | GOV.UK tells travellers to ensure they have a return ticket or a ticket out of Iraq to a third destination.[2] |
| Passport | GOV.UK: at least 6 months' validity from arrival and at least one blank page.[2] |
| Indian departure rule | Iraq is one of 17 ECR countries. ECR passport holders travelling on a visit visa need a valid passport, a valid visa and a "Return Ticket".[3] |
| Kurdistan Region | Runs its own e-visa process; GOV.UK says those visas are valid for travel within the Kurdistan Region only.[2][4] |
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Iraq?
Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa for Iraq, and for a visit the route now runs through the federal e-visa portal. The portal includes a "Visa Types" search where you select your country and passport type to see what is available to you.[1] We could not load the India result directly in October 2026, so run that search yourself before you plan the trip around a particular category.
What the portal states for everyone is simple: the e-visa lets you enter without visiting an embassy, is valid for 30 days, can be single or multiple entry, and needs a valid passport plus a white-background photo.[1] GOV.UK adds that British applicants should apply at least 24 hours before travel and quotes $160 and 60 days for them.[2] Those numbers differ from the portal's 30-day description and may not apply to Indian passports, so treat the figure the portal shows you at payment as the one that counts.
India's ECR rule: why the return ticket question starts at home
This is the part that catches pilgrims and first-time travellers. India's Ministry of External Affairs lists 17 Emigration Check Required countries: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Libya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, the UAE and Yemen.[3]
If your passport is marked ECR and you are travelling to one of these countries on a visit, residence or study visa (not for employment), the Ministry says you should produce a valid passport, a valid visa and a "Return Ticket".[3] Indian immigration at the departure airport is where this is checked.
Be clear about this: the Ministry's wording is "Return Ticket". An officer applying that rule may well want a purchased fare, and an unpaid booking might not pass. If your passport is ECR, buy a real return ticket before you fly to Iraq. Use a reservation only for the visa application stage, if at all.
If your passport carries no ECR notation, this specific emigration check does not apply to you, though airlines and Iraqi officers can still ask about your return. Employment travel to Iraq on an ECR passport is a separate matter, needing emigration clearance through the Ministry's system, and is outside the scope of this guide.
Does the Iraq e-visa ask for a flight booking?
The portal's public pages list the passport and the photo, not a flight document.[1] Individual application forms can ask for travel details such as arrival date and entry point, and secondary sites often claim a flight booking is required. We could not confirm that on an official page, so we will not claim it.
What we can say is that GOV.UK, describing what border officials and airlines expect, tells travellers to have a return ticket or a ticket out of Iraq to a third destination.[2] That is a travel-day requirement, and on travel day you should hold a paid ticket.
A reservation therefore fits a narrow but real gap: when you need dated flights to fill in the e-visa form, to attach if the form allows it, or to give a group organiser before the visa is issued, without buying a fare you might lose.
| Stage | What is asked | Does a held reservation fit? |
|---|---|---|
| E-visa application on evisa.iq | Passport, photo; form fields for travel details[1] | Yes, as dated evidence of your plan where one is useful |
| Departure from India on an ECR passport | Passport, visa, "Return Ticket"[3] | May not satisfy it. Hold a paid return ticket. |
| Airline check-in | Printed e-visa; airline may ask about the return | Carry the paid ticket |
| Arrival at an Iraqi airport | Return ticket or ticket to a third country, per GOV.UK[2] | Carry the paid ticket |
Filling in the Iraq e-visa form?
Dated flights into Baghdad, Najaf, Basra or Erbil, booked under your name and checkable on the carrier's site. ₹699 or $9 each.
Iraq e-visa fees and timing: what we could confirm
We would rather tell you what is uncertain than print a number that turns out wrong. Here is where things stand after checking the official pages in October 2026:
- Validity: the federal portal describes a 30-day e-visa, single or multiple entry.[1]
- Fee: GOV.UK quotes $160 for British applicants.[2] We found no official figure for Indian passports, so rely on the amount the portal shows before you pay.
- When to apply: GOV.UK says at least 24 hours before travel.[2] We would not cut it that fine; allow a week so a query does not cost you the trip.
- Delivery: by email, to be printed and shown at border control.[1]
Unofficial sites quote processing times and fees with great confidence. Several disagree with each other, which is a good reason to stick to the portal.
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah: the Kurdistan Region is different
The Kurdistan Regional Government runs its own e-visa process, separate from evisa.iq, on the portal visit.gov.krd. GOV.UK notes that Kurdistan Region visas, whether through that portal or on arrival, are valid for travel within the Kurdistan Region only.[2][4]
Several unofficial sites say Indian nationals are not eligible for Kurdistan Region visas. When we tried in October 2026, the portal's information pages would not open, so this remains unconfirmed. If Erbil or Sulaymaniyah is your entry point, check eligibility on visit.gov.krd directly, and if you plan to continue to Baghdad, Najaf or Karbala, you will need the federal visa anyway.
The practical lesson for reservations: your flight route has to match the visa you hold. A federal e-visa with a reservation into Erbil, or a Kurdistan visa with a plan to visit Karbala, tells the reviewer your paperwork and your trip do not line up.
Travelling for ziyarat: Najaf, Karbala and Baghdad
A large share of Indian travellers to Iraq go for pilgrimage, often in organised groups. A few points apply to them in particular:
- Each pilgrim needs their own visa and their own ticket, even when the group organiser books everything.
- ECR passports need the return ticket at Indian departure. Organisers should issue paid tickets before the group reaches the airport.
- Dates around major observances fill up early. A reservation can hold your planned dates for the visa stage, but buy the actual fare once visas are issued.
- Read India's travel advisory for Iraq on the Embassy of India in Baghdad's website before booking; it is updated as conditions change.[5]
Say a family of four from Lucknow plans to fly into Najaf on 10 August and back from Baghdad on 20 August. The e-visa forms carry those dates; the reservation shows Najaf in and Baghdad out; once all four visas arrive, they buy the tickets; at Lucknow or Delhi, the ECR-passport holders among them show the paid return.
For group organisers, one more practical point: keep a single sheet listing each pilgrim's passport number, ECR or non-ECR status, visa reference and airline booking reference once tickets are bought. When an officer at the Indian departure gate asks a question about one traveller, the organiser can answer at once instead of holding up the whole group.
What an Iraq reservation needs to show
- Names exactly as on the passport, including the full surname.
- The Iraqi entry airport you will name on the e-visa, whether that is Baghdad, Najaf, Basra or Erbil.
- A departure from Iraq back home or to a third country, inside the visa's 30 days.
- A PNR that opens on the airline's "Manage booking" page.

Routes from India and transit on the way
Most Indian travellers reach Iraq with at least one stop, very often through a Gulf hub. Which carriers operate depends heavily on the season and on regional conditions, so check live schedules close to the time.
When you connect, the transit country's rules apply. Staying airside on one booking is usually simple; separate tickets may mean collecting bags and passing immigration, which can need a visa. Our transit visa guide and layover rules explain the difference. If your trip also takes in Iran or Jordan, see our Iran visa guide and Jordan visa guide.
From plan to boarding: the order we suggest
Use the Visa Types search on evisa.iq, or visit.gov.krd for Kurdistan-only trips.
Within the visa's 30 days, and matching the visa you will request.
A day or two before applying.
It arrives by email; border control wants the printout.
Essential for ECR passports, and expected at Iraqi entry.
An Iraq booking from us lasts at most two weeks, with the hold length chosen by the carrier, so keep step 3 close to step 4. Our article on timing a reservation goes further.
Where Iraq trips go wrong on paper
- Expecting a visa on arrival in Baghdad or Najaf based on old blog posts.
- Using a Kurdistan visa for federal Iraq, or the other way round.
- An ECR passport holder arriving at the Indian airport with only a reservation.
- Passport with under six months left on arrival.
- Return date beyond 30 days of entry.
- Forgetting to print the e-visa.
If you do submit a reservation anywhere, check it first using our step-by-step PNR check.
Iraq visa questions from Indian travellers
Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Iraq?
Not for a federal Iraq visit visa. GOV.UK states that visit visas on arrival are no longer available and points to the e-visa portal. The Kurdistan Region runs a separate system with its own eligibility rules, which you should check on visit.gov.krd. Plan on getting your visa before you fly.
Is a flight reservation enough for the Iraq e-visa?
The portal's public pages list a passport and a photo, not a flight document. A reservation helps when you need dated flights for the form or a group organiser. For travel itself, GOV.UK expects a return or onward ticket, and India's ECR rule asks for a return ticket, so buy one before departure.
What is an ECR passport and why does it matter for Iraq?
ECR means Emigration Check Required, shown in some Indian passports. Iraq is one of 17 ECR countries listed by the Ministry of External Affairs. ECR holders visiting Iraq should carry a valid passport, a valid visa and a return ticket, and Indian immigration can check this at departure.
How long is the Iraq e-visa valid?
The official portal describes the e-visa as valid for 30 days, single or multiple entry. GOV.UK quotes 60 days for British nationals. Your passport and visa category decide which applies, so read what the portal shows you before paying, and keep your return flight inside that period.
Does a Kurdistan Region visa let me visit Karbala?
No, according to GOV.UK, Kurdistan Region visas are valid for travel within the Kurdistan Region only. To visit Baghdad, Najaf or Karbala you need the federal e-visa from evisa.iq. Match your flights to the visa: entering through Erbil with a federal visa is possible, but check before you book.
How early should I book the reservation?
A day or two before you apply. Since the hold runs for two weeks at most, and the carrier sets its length, booking far in advance gains nothing. Once the visa is issued, replace it with a paid ticket.
Our Iraq reservation and its price
We create a live booking for your Iraq dates, under the name in your passport, and email the document within roughly ten minutes. Check it independently through the carrier's booking lookup, using the reference and your family name. Because the seat is unpaid, it serves planning and visa forms only; it will not get you on board, nor meet a rule that demands a purchased return.
Every pilgrim or traveller is charged the same flat fee for a single or return route; open-jaw routes like Najaf in and Baghdad out are priced per pair of legs. See the price list, book on the booking page by UPI, card or netbanking, and follow progress on order tracking. For the wider picture, read flight reservation for visa, check rules by country, read our proof of onward travel guide, or go to the home page.
No guarantees: the Iraqi authorities decide on visas and entry, and Indian immigration decides on departure. Describe a reservation as exactly that, and buy your real ticket before you travel.
