Chile works differently from its neighbours. Its general visa requirements, published by the Chilean foreign ministry, do not mention flights at all. Yet consular officers can ask for anything extra they think is needed, and a round-trip booking is usually the simplest way to show that your trip has a clear start and end. Add a processing time that the New Delhi section says can run to six months, and timing your reservation becomes the real puzzle. This guide sets out the official rules, the large US-visa exemption for Indian travellers, and a practical way to handle the flight evidence.

Do Indians need a visa for Chile?
Many do not, thanks to one of the broadest exemptions in South America. The Chilean consular section in New Delhi states that Indian citizens holding a US visa "de cualquier tipo", including a Green Card, are exempt from the Chilean visa. The only US visa that does not count is the C transit visa, and the US visa needs at least six months of validity when you land in Chile. You can stay up to 90 days, and the section adds that travellers must have enough money to support themselves.[1]
Notice how much wider this is than Argentina's version. On the wording, a US student or work visa seems to qualify as long as the validity test is met; if your case is unusual, email the consulate first. Either way, check the expiry printed on your US visa against your arrival date.
If you have no qualifying US visa, you apply for what Chile calls an "autorización previa o visa", a prior authorisation that Chilean consulates issue to nationals of certain countries for short visits of up to 90 days.[2] Holders of other passports can see whether they need one through the country list on the consular site.
What do Chile's official requirements say about flights?
Nothing direct. The consular requirements page lists, in order: the online form explaining the purpose and length of the trip; a justification for multiple entries; a 5x5 cm colour photo on white; a copy of the passport data page; proof of residence status if you apply from a third country; proof of your own economic means; no ban on entering Chile; and, for Indian business travellers, a sponsorship letter from a company in India or Chile, legalised and apostilled.[2]
Item (h) is the one that matters for flights. It says consulates may request additional documents, including an apostilled or legalised criminal record certificate, and may call you to a personal interview where you bring everything in original.[2]
Other Chilean missions do spell out flight evidence. The embassy in Beijing, for example, lists "Reserva de pasaje ida y vuelta" (a round-trip ticket reservation), a hotel reservation and a travel itinerary on its tourist visa page.[6] That is not the Indian list, but it tells you how Chilean consular staff think about a tourist file: a reservation, not a purchase.
Our view: include a round-trip flight reservation with your Chile application even though the list does not demand one. Your form has to explain how long you are staying, and a verifiable booking backs that up in a way a sentence cannot. It costs far less than an interview request asking for it later.
Which documents back up a Chile tourist application?
Think of the file in three layers: what the platform requires, what proves your trip is real, and what the officer may ask for later. The table puts them together.

The ministry's older guidance for tourist visas also mentions hotel reservations when you have no host in Chile, and proof that you can pay for the trip.[7] It all points the same way: the officer wants to see a defined, funded holiday.
How do you time a flight reservation when processing takes months?
This is the hard part, so here is our straight answer. Our reservations remain valid for up to 2 weeks, with the exact period set by the airline. A Chilean decision can take weeks or months. The reservation will very likely have lapsed before the decision. That is normal and expected, and it is the same reason consulates elsewhere tell applicants not to buy tickets early.
What the reservation proves is the plan you described on the day you applied. If the consulate later asks for updated travel documents, or calls you for an interview, book a fresh reservation for the same trip a couple of days before you respond. Never alter an old document to change its dates.
A worked example. Say you hope to travel on 10 March. Because Delhi warns of up to six months, you file in early October. You book the reservation on the day you upload, with flights on 10 March and 24 March. In January an officer emails asking for an interview on 22 January. On the 20th you book a new reservation for the same dates and bring it, with your originals, to the interview.
And once the authorisation arrives, buy your real ticket. Do not buy a non-refundable fare while the file is pending.

What happens at the border in Chile?
Your status is granted at the airport. Chile's ChileAtiende service explains that the Permanencia Transitoria permit is given by the border control authority during the immigration check when you enter. The documents it lists are a valid passport or identity document, and the prior authorisation from the Chilean consulate if your nationality needs one. Proof of the permit is the Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM).[4] SERMIG, the migration service, adds that the 90 days can be cut short in the cases its law allows.[3]
We found no official Chilean page in October 2026 that names a return ticket as an entry document. Two things still push you to carry one. The New Delhi page says visitors must have enough funds for their stay, and an onward booking helps explain how long that stay will be. And your airline checks rules before you board, using IATA Timatic.[8] A traveller relying on the US-visa exemption should expect the check-in agent to look at that US visa and at the return leg. If a carrier wants a paid onward ticket, a reservation may not satisfy it, and the airline decides.

How do you get to Santiago from India?
Every route needs at least one connection, and your choice of hub can add a visa to your list.
- Via a US city: most Indian travellers need US visa paperwork even for a plane change. Our transit visa guide explains the C-1 and when a B visa covers it. A US visa holder is also likely to be Chile-exempt.

- Via a European or Gulf hub: check whether that airport asks for a transit visa from your nationality before you finalise the routing.

Applying for a Chilean visa, step by step
- Check the exemption first. Any US visa except type C, valid six months on arrival, or a Green Card, means you can skip the application.[1]
- Find your office. Use the state list on the New Delhi page to see whether New Delhi or Mumbai handles you.
- Gather salary slips and bank statements covering at least three months, and the passport copy and photo in the required size.
- Write a clear purpose and length of stay on the online form. Keep the dates realistic for a decision that may take months.
- Book a flight reservation on the day you upload. Check names against your passport and verify the PNR on the airline's "Manage booking" page; our verification guide explains how.
- Add hotels or an invitation. A hotel reservation on the same dates completes the picture.
- Respond fast to any request, refreshing the flight reservation for the same trip if the original has lapsed.

You can, but for most people it ties up money for months with no benefit, since nothing in Chile's list asks for a paid fare. A refundable ticket also depends on the fare rules not changing. A reservation does the job of showing dates; buy the real ticket once the visa is granted.
Do I need a return ticket to enter Chile?
The official entry documents are a valid passport and, if needed, the consular authorisation. No official page we found names a return ticket. Airlines still check before boarding and often want to see your way out, particularly if you travel on the US-visa exemption, so carry proof of departure.
