Armenia is one of the few places where an Indian traveller can end up with three very different answers to "do I need a flight booking?", depending on what else is already in the passport. If you hold a qualifying residence permit, you may not need a visa at all. If you hold a good foreign visa, the e-visa asks for almost nothing. If you hold neither, the Armenian Embassy in New Delhi lists an "air ticket reservation (with return)" as a mandatory document. This guide walks through each route using the Embassy's and the Foreign Ministry's own pages, then explains what a held reservation can and cannot do for you.

Which Armenia entry route applies to you?
Start with what you already hold, because that decides how much paperwork Armenia wants. The Embassy page for Indian citizens is unusually clear about this, and it is the page we would bookmark before anything else.[1]

The Gulf permit point trips people up. The Embassy says a Gulf residence permit counts only when it exists as a physical card or a sticker in the passport, so a purely digital permit may not be enough at the border.[1] If you are a Dubai resident on an e-residency without a card, apply for the e-visa instead of gambling at Zvartnots.
Indians with a Gulf, US or EU residence permit: the 2026–2027 exemption
This is the change most readers have not heard about yet. The Foreign Ministry's list for the period 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027 names 111 countries whose nationals can enter visa-free if they hold a residence permit issued by the USA, an EU member state, a Schengen state, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Oman. India appears on that list.[3]
Two conditions matter. Your permit needs six months or more left on the day you land in Armenia, and the stay can run to 180 days in a one-year period.[3] Say you live in Riyadh and your iqama expires on 20 February 2027. A trip starting on 1 September 2026 works; a trip starting on 1 October 2026 does not, because less than six months would remain.
The notice does not ask for a flight booking. Even so, airlines decide who boards, and the check-in agent in Dubai or Doha will look for a reason you qualify. Carry the permit card itself and a copy of your return plans. If your permit is close to the six-month line, we would choose the e-visa route rather than rely on the exemption.
What the Armenia e-visa asks Indian applicants for
The Embassy lists two sets of mandatory documents for Indians who apply online. You need one set or the other, not both.[1]
- Option 1: "Travel (Medical) Insurance" and a valid residence permit or valid visa from the EU or Schengen states, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the UK, Canada, Russia or Japan, or a residence permit from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman.
- Option 2: "Travel (Medical) Insurance", "Air ticket reservation (with return)", an invitation from a party interested in your visit, and "Proof of financial means (bank statement for the last 3 months, certificate of employment with salary, work contract, other proofs)".
The invitation in option 2 can come from a local tourist agency, university, employer or another Armenian company or organisation, according to the Embassy.[1] In practice, most leisure travellers get it through a tour operator in Yerevan that is arranging part of the trip.
Notice the exact wording: a "reservation", not a "purchased ticket". That matters, because it means a genuine held booking in your name, showing the flight into Armenia and the flight out, matches what the Embassy wrote. Nothing on the page asks for proof of payment.
Our view: for option 2, a verifiable return reservation is the sensible choice. Buying a non-refundable fare before a three-working-day decision makes little sense, and the Embassy's wording does not require it.
Applying at the Embassy of Armenia in New Delhi
Some applicants still go to the Embassy at Anand Niketan, for instance when they need a different visa type or prefer a sticker in the passport.[1] The Embassy's mandatory list for this route is longer:
- Passport valid for the entire stay, plus copies of visas and permits from the past three years
- Visa application form and photograph
- Travel (medical) insurance
- Invitation
- Proof of financial means
- Air ticket reservation (with return)
- Hotel reservation
- Consular fee
Here the reservation sits next to a hotel booking, so the two must agree. If the flight lands on 12 November and leaves on 19 November, the hotel needs to cover seven nights from 12 November. What should an Armenia flight reservation show?
- Your name as printed in the passport. Given name and surname in the right fields, no nicknames.
- Arrival in Armenia and a return or exit flight. The Embassy wording is "with return", so a one-way booking into Yerevan does not match it.
- Dates inside the visa you are asking for. If you request a 21-day e-visa, a reservation that leaves on day 25 is a mismatch.
- Dates that agree with the invitation, insurance and hotel.
- A booking reference (PNR) and airline, so an Armenian official or you yourself can find it through the carrier's "Manage booking" lookup.
If your plan includes Georgia by road, your exit flight may leave from Tbilisi rather than Yerevan. That is fine for many travellers, but explain it in a short cover note so nobody wonders why there is no flight out of Armenia. Held reservation or paid ticket for Armenia?

The honest summary: for Armenia, the official wording asks for a reservation, so a genuine held booking fits it. What it cannot do is get you on a plane. Once the e-visa arrives, buy the real ticket you intend to fly on.
Applying under e-visa option 2?
A return booking into Yerevan, held under your passport name, which you can look up yourself on the carrier's website. ₹699 or $9 per traveller.
Getting to Yerevan from India and the Gulf
Most Indian travellers reach Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan with one connection, often through a Gulf hub. Routings change by season, so check which airlines actually operate on your dates before you build an itinerary around one of them.
Two practical points come up again and again. First, if you connect in the UAE, Qatar or another hub and stay airside, the hub's own transit rules apply; check them, especially on separate bookings. Will the airline check your return flight to Armenia?
Armenia's official pages we checked do not set out a separate onward-ticket rule at the border. Airlines, though, are responsible for carrying passengers who are correctly documented, and staff at check-in in Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai or Doha commonly ask Indian passport holders to show the e-visa printout or the qualifying permit. Some will also ask how you plan to leave.
What to carry on the day:
- The printed e-visa, or the physical residence-permit card or sticker if you are using the exemption.
- Your paid return or onward ticket. By this stage you should hold a real ticket, not a reservation.
- Insurance certificate and the invitation, if you applied under option 2.
- Your first-night accommodation address.
If you travel overland from Georgia, the same principles apply at the land crossing: valid visa or exemption, and a believable exit plan.
Putting an Armenia e-visa file together, step by step
Exemption, option 1 or option 2, based on the visas and permits you hold.
Choose arrival and departure that sit inside the visa length you will request.
Make sure both carry the same dates as your flights.
Do this a day or two before you upload, so it is current while the application is reviewed.
Look it up under "Manage booking" using the PNR and family name.
Upload everything, pay, and wait for the decision by email.
A note on timing. Each Armenian reservation we issue holds for a period of up to two weeks, and that period is the airline's call, not ours. Mistakes that slow down an Armenia application
- One-way booking under option 2. The Embassy asks for a reservation "with return".
- Relying on a digital-only Gulf permit for the exemption or visa on arrival.
- Permit expiring within six months of arrival when using the 2026–2027 exemption.
- Invitation dates that differ from the reservation.
- Passport validity too short for the whole stay.
- A PNR that cannot be found on the airline site.

Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Armenia?
Only in specific cases. The Embassy of Armenia in India says visa on arrival is available to Indian citizens who hold a current visa or permit issued by the EU or Schengen states, the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan or Russia, or a Gulf residence permit as a card or sticker. Everyone else should get an e-visa before flying.
Is a flight reservation enough for the Armenia e-visa?
For Indians applying under option 2, the Embassy's own wording is "air ticket reservation (with return)", so a genuine held booking with a working PNR matches the request. Under option 1, no flight document is listed at all. The decision rests with Armenian officials, and they can ask for more.
I live in Dubai. Do I need a visa for Armenia?
Between 1 July 2026 and 1 July 2027, Indian nationals holding a UAE residence permit valid for at least six months from entry are on Armenia's temporary visa-exemption list, allowing up to 180 days in a year. The permit must be a physical card or passport sticker. If yours is not, use the e-visa instead.
How long does the Armenia e-visa take?
The Embassy of Armenia in India states three working days. Apply with some margin, because a missing document or unclear scan can add a round of questions. We would apply at least a week before travel and book the reservation a day or two before uploading.
Who can write the invitation for option 2?
The Embassy lists a local tourist agency, a university, an employer or another local company or organisation interested in your visit. For a holiday, a Yerevan tour operator handling part of your trip is the usual source. Make sure the invitation's dates match your reservation and insurance.
Can my return flight leave from Tbilisi instead of Yerevan?
Yes, many itineraries combine both countries. The reservation then shows arrival in Yerevan and departure from Tbilisi, and you should explain the overland leg in a short cover note. Georgia has its own entry rules, so check them separately before you finalise the route.
How long will the reservation stay valid?
It lasts a maximum of two weeks; the carrier fixes the precise hold time. For a three-working-day e-visa that is ample, provided you book close to the day you submit rather than weeks ahead.
