Mock Airline Ticket for Visa: Mock-Up PDF or Genuine Reservation?

A "mock airline ticket" for a visa can mean two very different things. One is an edited or generated PDF with no booking behind it, which you should never submit. The other is a genuine flight reservation held in an airline's system under a booking reference (PNR) that an officer can look up. Only the second is safe.

People type "mock airline ticket" or "mock flight ticket" into Google for an honest reason. A visa checklist asks for flight details, the visa isn't decided yet, and nobody wants to spend tens of thousands of rupees on a fare that may go to waste. The trouble is that the word "mock" covers both a harmless travel document and a forgery. This guide separates the two, shows you how to check which one you have, and explains what consulates actually ask for. Every official rule is linked in the numbered sources at the end.

Mock airline tickets: key facts

QuestionShort answer
Is "mock ticket" an official term? No. Consulates write "flight reservation", "itinerary", "booking" or "ticket". "Mock" and "dummy" are informal words used by applicants and sellers.
Do most visa checklists need a paid fare?Usually not. The Netherlands says you do not need a paid travel ticket; German missions in India list a "Flight reservation".[3][4] Some missions do ask for confirmed tickets, so read your own list.[5]
What is a mock-up PDF?A document designed to look like an airline booking, with a made-up or copied booking code. No airline holds it.
What happens if a false document is found?Refusal at minimum. The UK can refuse future entry clearance for 10 years; Canada can ban you for at least 5 years; the US treats fraud or misrepresentation as a permanent ineligibility.[7][8][9]
What does a genuine reservation have?A six-character PNR that opens on the airline's "Manage booking" page with your surname.[10]

What do people mean by a "mock airline ticket"?

Mostly, they mean a flight document for a visa file that costs far less than a real fare. But when we talk to applicants, three different ideas turn up under the same label.

A design mock-up. Graphic designers, film crews and teachers make ticket-shaped props all the time. Nobody minds, because nobody submits them to a government. The problem starts when that same template, filled in with your name, ends up in a visa file.

A held reservation. This is a real booking made in an airline's reservation system and held without the full fare being paid. It carries a booking reference, your name and real flight numbers. It is temporary, and it cannot be used to fly, but it exists. This is what most visa checklists have in mind when they ask for a "flight reservation".

A sample. Some people only want to see what a reservation looks like before they order. That is what our sample reservations page is for. Samples are marked as such and are for viewing, not for submitting.

So the honest answer is that "mock ticket" is a search phrase, not a document type. What matters is whether there is a booking behind the paper.

Mock-up PDF vs genuine reservation: how do they differ?

They can look identical on screen. The difference is entirely in what stands behind them.

Edited or generated mock-up PDFGenuine held reservation
Exists in an airline system?NoYes, for as long as the hold lasts
Booking reference (PNR)Invented, reused or copied from someone elseIssued by the reservation system for your booking
Opens on "Manage booking"?No, or it opens someone else's tripYes, with the PNR and your surname
Names and flightsTyped onto a templateEntered into the booking itself
How a consulate may see itAs a false documentAs evidence of a travel plan
Typical costOften "free" from a generatorA small service fee (ours is ₹699 / $9 per passenger)
Can you fly on it?NoNo. It is a reservation, not a paid ticket
A held reservation is still not a ticket. Describe it as a "flight reservation" in your file.

Notice the last row. Neither document gets you on a plane. A reservation is not a cheaper version of a ticket; it is a different thing, and you should call it what it is.

Why is a mock-up PDF so risky?

Because immigration law treats a false document very differently from a weak one. A thin file gets refused and you can reapply. A false document can follow you for years. Here is what the official rules say, in plain terms:

  • Schengen: Article 32 of the EU Visa Code lists false, counterfeit or forged documents among the grounds for refusing a visa.[1] Annex II, by contrast, names a "reservation of" a return or round ticket as acceptable evidence, so a genuine reservation is exactly what the rules expect.
  • United Kingdom: under paragraph SUI 9.1 of the Immigration Rules, an application must be refused where the decision maker is satisfied deception was used, including providing false documents. Table SUI 12.1 sets a 10-year refusal period for later entry clearance applications where deception was used.[7]
  • Canada: IRCC says that if you send false documents or information, your application will be refused and you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years, with a permanent record of fraud.[8]
  • United States: the State Department describes a finding of fraud or misrepresentation under INA section 212(a)(6)(C)(i) as a permanent ineligibility.[9]

We can't tell you how often consulates check flight documents, because they don't publish it. What we can tell you is that checking takes an officer about thirty seconds on an airline website. Betting a ten-year ban against a ₹699 fee is a bad trade.

Our position: we do not make, edit or "fix" tickets. If someone offers you a PDF they can change after the fact (new dates, new name, same booking code), that is a mock-up, whatever they call it.

How can you tell whether you have been sold a mock-up?

Test it yourself before it goes anywhere near a consulate. It takes two minutes.

  1. Find the booking reference. It is usually six letters and numbers, printed near the top as "Booking reference" or "PNR".[10]
  2. Identify the airline that operates the first flight. Look at the flight number prefix, for example LH for Lufthansa or EK for Emirates.
  3. Open that airline's own website yourself. Type the address; don't follow a link in the seller's email.
  4. Go to "Manage booking" and enter the PNR and your surname.
  5. Compare what opens with your PDF. Names, flight numbers, dates and route should match line for line.

Our step-by-step guide to verifying a reservation before submission includes what to do when an airline site asks for extra details.

A few warning signs that point to a mock-up:

  • The seller lets you choose or edit the booking code.
  • The PDF arrives instantly from a "generator" with no airline named on the booking.
  • The booking opens, but under a different passenger's name.
  • You are offered a "ticket number" or "e-ticket" for a fare you have not paid.
  • Changes to dates are promised at no cost and with the same PNR, any number of times.

What does a genuine flight reservation contain?

Once you know the parts, a mock-up is easier to spot. A real airline booking has these elements:

  • A six-character booking reference (PNR). Emirates, for example, describes it as the six-character alphanumeric code after the "Booking reference" field.[10] Travel agent bookings may show a second, agency reference too.
  • Passenger names exactly as in the passport. Surname and given names, in the airline's format.
  • Real flight numbers on real schedules. A flight that doesn't operate on that day of the week is a giveaway.
  • Origin, destination and dates that match your application form.
  • Booking status. Wording varies by airline and by how the booking was made.

A ticket number is a separate thing. Emirates explains that a ticket number is 13 characters long and that its own tickets normally start with 176.[11] That number belongs to a paid ticket. The IATA Ticketing Handbook is the industry's reference for how tickets are issued and numbered.[12] If a document claims to be a paid e-ticket and you never paid a fare, something is wrong.

What do consulates actually ask for instead?

For most short-stay visas, a reservation or a plan. A paid ticket is the exception, not the rule. A few official examples, last checked October 2026:

MissionOfficial wording on flightsWill a held reservation fit?
Netherlands (Schengen)A reservation showing travel to and from the Schengen area; "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[3]Yes
Germany, missions in India"Flight reservation"; a booked ticket "does not result in a preferred processing".[4]Yes
Germany, Embassy Islamabad"Confirmed round trip tickets covering the duration of your stay".[5]It may not. Ask the mission or follow the wording
United Kingdom (visitor)Flight bookings are listed among documents that are less useful, unless transiting.[6]Not needed
United States (B1/B2)Don't make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.[13]Not needed
Canada (visitor)Suggests documents such as flight details to show how long you'll stay.[14]Yes, as supporting evidence
Last checked: October 2026. Wording differs between missions of the same country, so use your own centre's list.

The Islamabad line matters. Where a mission writes "confirmed tickets", a held reservation may not satisfy it, and we won't pretend otherwise. In that case, buy a refundable fare or ask the mission what it accepts. For the countries that do want a reservation, see flight reservation requirements by country.

What if you already sent a mock-up?

Don't try to fix it quietly. Swapping a document mid-process, or sending a second "corrected" version without explanation, tends to make things worse. If you've realised that a flight document in a pending application had no booking behind it, talk to a qualified immigration adviser or contact the mission through its official channel before doing anything else. Be straightforward about what happened.

If the application is still at the preparation stage and nothing has been submitted, the fix is simple: discard the mock-up, get a genuine reservation, and make sure your form, hotel bookings and insurance match the new dates. Check it on the airline site before your appointment. That is all an honest file needs.

What about a mock ticket for airline check-in or onward travel?

Here the audience is different. At check-in, airline staff decide whether you meet the entry rules of your destination, and some countries want to see a ticket out. A mock-up PDF fails at this desk for the same reason it fails at a consulate: the agent can pull up the booking. Some destinations accept a reservation; others say onward travel must be booked and paid for. Our onward ticket guide lists what each country says, so you can tell which situation you're in before you fly.

How do you get a genuine reservation instead?

There are three honest routes. You can buy a fully refundable fare and cancel it later, accepting whatever fees the fare rules carry. You can use an airline's own paid hold, where one is offered. Or you can ask a service like ours to create a held reservation in your name. We explain the cost of each route in flight reservation for visa, so we won't repeat it here.

If you use us, the process looks like this:

1
Choose the route and dates you really plan

They should match your application form, hotel and insurance.

2
Type names from the passport's data page

Copy the spelling exactly, middle names included.

3
See the hold window, then pay

The booking form shows how long the reservation is held before you pay by UPI, card or netbanking through Razorpay.

4
Open it on the airline's site

The PDF arrives in about 10 minutes. Check the PNR on "Manage booking" before you submit.

One practical tip. Because a hold doesn't last forever, book it close to your appointment. Say your biometrics slot is on 14 November: we'd book on the 12th or 13th, not in October. Schengen lets you apply up to six months before travel,[2] so the gap between an early booking and a late appointment can be long.

Skip the mock-up. Get a reservation that opens.

Mock airline ticket: frequently asked questions

Is a mock airline ticket legal?

A ticket-shaped prop is legal to make. Submitting an edited or generated booking to a consulate is a different matter: Schengen, UK, Canadian and US rules all treat false documents as grounds for refusal, and some impose long bans. A genuine reservation held in an airline system is not a mock-up, and you can submit it honestly as a reservation.

Is a "mock flight ticket" the same as a dummy ticket?

People use both phrases loosely. Sellers of "dummy tickets" range from services that create real reservations to sites that only fill in templates. Ignore the label and test the document: if the PNR opens on the airline's website with your surname and the same flights, it is a reservation. If it doesn't, treat it as a mock-up.

Can a consulate check whether my reservation is real?

Yes. Anyone with the booking reference and surname can look it up on most airline "Manage booking" pages. Consulates don't publish how often they do this, so assume it can happen. A held reservation also expires at a time set by the airline, so book it close to your appointment rather than weeks ahead.

Can I use a free online ticket generator?

We'd say no. A generator produces a picture of a booking, not a booking. The code on it either opens nothing or opens someone else's trip. For a visa file that is worse than sending no flight document at all, because it can be read as a false document rather than a missing one.

What should I call the document in my cover letter?

Call it a "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary", never a "ticket" unless you bought one. Officers read many files and know the difference. Accurate wording costs you nothing; inaccurate wording can turn an ordinary reservation into a misrepresentation problem. One plain sentence such as "I will buy tickets once a decision is made" is enough.

What if my checklist asks for a confirmed ticket?

Then a held reservation may not satisfy it, and you should follow the checklist. Options are a refundable fare you can cancel if the visa is refused, or a written question to the mission or visa centre about what they accept. Germany's embassy in Islamabad is one example that uses "confirmed round trip tickets".

Does a reservation guarantee my visa?

No. A reservation shows your plan; the decision rests on your whole file, including money, ties to home and the purpose of the trip. Nobody can promise approval, and you should be wary of anyone who does. A seller who promises a visa is usually also the seller who cuts corners on the document itself.
