Emirates Dummy Ticket for Visa: How the Reservation Works and How to Check It

An Emirates dummy ticket is a held Emirates reservation with a six-character booking reference, issued in your name but not paid for. You can open it on emirates.com under "Manage your booking" with that reference and your last name. It suits checklists asking for a reservation, but not Emirates' own UAE visa service, which needs an issued ticket.

People usually ask us for an Emirates reservation for one of two reasons. Either their route genuinely runs through Dubai, or they want an airline the visa officer will recognise at a glance. Both are fine. What matters more is knowing what an Emirates booking can and cannot prove, and how Emirates' own website treats a reservation that has not been paid for. This guide walks through that using Emirates' own pages, which we opened again in October 2026, plus the official visa rules where an Emirates reservation usually ends up.

Emirates reservation: key facts

QuestionWhat Emirates or the official source says
What do I need to look up a booking?Your booking reference and your last name, entered on "Manage your booking".[1]
What does the booking reference look like?A six-character alphanumeric code shown after "BOOKING REFERENCE" on an e-ticket. Travel agents' documents can show a second six-character reference.[4]
How is a ticket number different? It is a 13-character number, and Emirates-issued tickets normally start with 176.[4]
Can I hold a fare on emirates.com?Yes, through "Hold My Fare" on Economy Class. The pages we opened offer 24 hours free; terms have differed between regional sites.[2][3]
Can the name be corrected later?A misspelling can be corrected before the first flight; a ticket cannot be transferred to another person.[3]
Can I use a reservation for Emirates' UAE visa service? No. That service needs a confirmed Emirates booking with a ticket already issued.[5]

How does an Emirates reservation work in a visa file?

It works as evidence of a travel plan, nothing more. When a seat is held, Emirates' reservation system creates a record with your name, your flights and a booking reference. That record exists whether or not money has changed hands. A paid ticket adds a second layer on top: a 13-digit ticket number starting with 176, which is what actually lets you board.[4]

Most visa checklists only need the first layer. The Schengen rules, for example, accept a reservation as evidence of your plans, and the Dutch consular checklist says a paid ticket isn't required.[8][9] The officer wants to see that your dates, route and name line up with the rest of your application. A held Emirates booking does that job well, provided it is genuine and still current when you submit.

What it cannot do is replace a ticket where a ticket is specifically demanded. We come back to that below, because Emirates itself has one such case.

How do you check an Emirates booking on emirates.com?

Emirates says you need just two things: your booking reference and your last name.[1] Here is the routine we suggest the day you receive your reservation, and again the evening before your appointment:

  1. Go to emirates.com and pick your country site. Open Manage, then Manage your booking.
  2. Type the six-character booking reference exactly as printed. Watch for 0 and O, or 1 and I.
  3. Enter the last name as it appears on the reservation, which should match your passport.
  4. Check that each passenger, flight number, date and route is shown the way your visa form shows it.
  5. Take a screenshot or note the time you checked. If anything looks wrong, contact the issuer before you submit, not after.

If the page says the booking cannot be found, do not panic straight away. Re-type the reference, try the surname without spaces, and try the full surname if you have two. Our guide to looking up a PNR on the carrier's own site covers the usual reasons for a failed lookup, and how to verify a dummy ticket before submission gives a full pre-appointment checklist.

A small thing that trips people up: an itinerary booked through an agent can carry two references, the agent's system code and the airline's own. Emirates notes that the six-character reference on an agent's e-ticket also works on emirates.com.[4] Always test the one printed on the document you are submitting.

How should names appear on an Emirates booking?

Exactly as in your passport, in the same order, with every part included. Emirates explains that if you type several first names or several family names, they are normally joined together on the ticket. Their own example is a passenger booked as John Adam Smith appearing as SMITH/JOHNADAMMR, which they describe as standard industry practice.[3] So a squashed name on your reservation is not an error by itself. A missing or misspelt name is.

On corrections, Emirates allows a misspelt name to be fixed before the first flight of the itinerary, while a legal name change can be updated at any point. What it does not allow is moving a ticket to a different person.[3] For a visa reservation the practical lesson is simple: get the spelling right before the booking is created. Say your passport reads "MOHAMMED ASIF KHAN". Enter it that way, not as "Mohd Asif" because that is what your friends call you.

One more detail from the same Emirates FAQ: passengers whose passport shows no M or F gender marker may be refused entry or transit by some immigration authorities, Dubai included. Emirates says that decision sits outside its control.[3]

Does Emirates let you hold a fare yourself?

Yes. Emirates calls the feature Hold My Fare, and you choose it on the payment page of emirates.com. The India, UAE, UK, US and Saudi pages we opened in October 2026 all describe a 24-hour hold at no charge for Economy Class, with payment completed later under "Manage".[2] The Emirates FAQ adds that the hold is not available on special offers, codeshare or interline itineraries, or reward bookings paid with Skywards Miles, and that the fare is released if you do not pay in time.[3] The India page also lists departures from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Japan and Mexico as excluded.[2]

Be aware that Emirates' regional sites have not always matched. Some versions have described a longer hold of up to 72 hours for a fee instead of a free 24-hour one. We have not seen one figure that applies everywhere, so open the Hold My Fare page on the Emirates site for the country you are booking from and read what it says on the day.

Is a self-made hold useful for a visa? Occasionally. If your appointment is tomorrow and you simply need to show a plan, a 24-hour hold covers the gap. The trouble is that most visa processes take days or weeks, and a booking that lapses the night after you submit is worth very little if someone looks it up later. It also ties you to whatever fare and flight Emirates offers on that day.

The separate US 24-hour rule

If your trip touches the United States, a different rule applies to every airline flying there, Emirates included. Under US rules, a carrier serving the country must give you 24 hours after booking either to keep the quoted fare unpaid or to cancel penalty-free, provided departure is at least seven days off.[7] Airlines choose which of the two options to offer, so check the terms shown at checkout.

Emirates hold, refundable ticket or a reservation from us?

Each option proves a slightly different thing and costs a different amount. This is how we would weigh them for a visa file:

The catch: Emirates' UAE visa service needs a paid ticket

This is the point that catches the most people out, so it gets its own section. Emirates lets passengers apply for a UAE visa online through Manage your booking. According to its UAE visa page, eligibility depends on a confirmed Emirates booking with the ticket already issued. Your arrival in Dubai and your departure must both sit in that single booking, flown by Emirates.[5] For prearranged visas the same page asks for a copy of a return Emirates ticket whose number starts with 176, with dates matching your hotel booking.[5]

Put plainly: a held reservation, from us or from Hold My Fare, will not satisfy that route. If you want Emirates to arrange your UAE visa, you need to buy the ticket. Emirates wants online applications in a minimum of four international working days ahead of landing, and suggests going earlier still.[5]

There are other routes into the UAE. Emirates' FAQ, for example, describes a 14-day visa on arrival for eligible Indian nationals holding a US visa or green card valid for six months, at AED 120.[6] Visas sponsored by a UAE resident, or applied for through other channels, have their own document lists. Our guide to Dubai and UAE visa documents sets those out.

Which visas does an Emirates reservation usually support?

Emirates connects a great many cities through Dubai, so its bookings turn up in files for Europe, the UK, North America and beyond. The airline matters far less than what each destination asks for. Here is how the official wording reads for the most common ones:

DestinationWhat the official source says about flightsIs a held reservation enough?
Schengen areaThe EU lists travel documents among supporting papers; the Netherlands says a reservation in your name will do and a paid ticket is not needed.[8][9]Usually yes, unless your consulate's checklist asks for a paid ticket
United KingdomOn GOV.UK's list of weaker evidence, flight bookings appear (transit cases aside).[10]Optional; it adds little to a UK visitor file
United StatesHold off purchasing until the visa is issued, per the State Department.[11]A reservation is optional; don't buy early
UAE through EmiratesNeeds an issued Emirates ticket for the online visa service.[5]No

What an Emirates reservation from us looks like

Sample Emirates flight reservation PDF showing passenger name, Dubai connection, flight numbers and a six-character booking reference
Sample layout of an Emirates flight reservation. Your own document shows your names, dates and PNR. More examples are on the sample tickets page.

The PDF lists every passenger, each flight with its date and times, and the airline booking reference you can test on emirates.com. It is marked as a reservation. There is no boarding pass and no seat number, because none exists until a ticket is bought and checked in.

Set on Emirates? Say so in the notes box on the booking form. That request steers where we place the hold. When the particular Emirates flight won't hold, the next best flight for your route and date is used instead, and the carrier is printed on the PDF for you to see before submission.

What goes wrong with Emirates reservations?

From the visa desk side, the problems are almost always about mismatch rather than the airline. The common ones:

  • Booked too early. A reservation made three weeks before the appointment may have lapsed by the time anyone looks. Our habit is two or three days ahead of the appointment; three weeks is asking for trouble.
  • Dates that disagree with the hotel booking, insurance or leave letter. Emirates' own UAE visa page asks for ticket dates matching the hotel booking, which tells you how closely officials compare them.[5]
  • A nickname or shortened name instead of the passport spelling.
  • Calling it a ticket. On your form and covering letter, describe it as a flight reservation or itinerary.
  • Using a reservation where an issued ticket is required, as with Emirates' own UAE visa service.
  • A made-up PDF from a free "generator" with a reference that does not exist. That can be treated as a false document. We do not make fake or edited tickets.

If you want to understand how officers might look at the reference, read whether officers look up reservation codes.

How to get an Emirates reservation and what it costs

For Emirates routes we hold a genuine seat booking under your passport name, on dates you pick, and send you the airline's PNR. Since Emirates hasn't been paid a fare, it isn't something you can board with.

Book a flight reservation

Need a place to stay on the same dates? A matching hotel booking for visa keeps your file consistent. Travelling one way and asked for proof of exit instead? See onward ticket. For the general picture, start at the home page or read flight reservation for visa.

Honest limits: no reservation can guarantee a visa or boarding. The consulate, immigration officer or airline makes that decision. Where your checklist names a paid, issued ticket, the safer move is a refundable Emirates fare, or an email to the mission asking what they will take.

Emirates reservation: frequently asked questions

Can I check an Emirates dummy ticket on the Emirates website?

Yes, if it is a genuine held booking. Open "Manage your booking" on emirates.com, enter the six-character booking reference and your last name, and the flights should appear. If nothing comes up, re-type the reference carefully and try the surname as printed on the PDF. A document that never shows up anywhere is not a real reservation.

Is Emirates Hold My Fare free?

On the Emirates country pages we opened in October 2026, including India, the UAE and the UK, it was free for 24 hours on Economy Class. Some regional Emirates sites have described a longer hold for a fee instead. Read the Hold My Fare page on the Emirates site for your own country before relying on either figure.

Can I use a reservation to apply for a UAE visa through Emirates?

No. Emirates ties its online UAE visa service to a confirmed Emirates booking whose ticket is already issued, with both Dubai legs inside it. A held reservation does not meet that. Other UAE visa routes have different rules, so check the route you are using.

Why is my name joined together on the reservation?

Airline systems join multiple given names or surnames into one block. Emirates gives the example of John Adam Smith appearing as SMITH/JOHNADAMMR and calls it standard practice. That is fine. What matters is that every part of your passport name is present and correctly spelt, in the right order.

How far ahead should I book an Emirates reservation for a visa?

Close to the appointment. We suggest two or three days before you submit, so it is live when the file is opened. You'll see how long the hold is meant to last before paying. Should the appointment move, a fresh reservation beats leaning on an old one.

Will the consulate accept an Emirates reservation?

Most consulates that ask for a flight reservation or itinerary accept a genuine held booking, and the airline name is not the deciding factor. Nobody can promise acceptance, though. Read your own visa centre's checklist; if it asks for a confirmed, paid ticket, a reservation may not satisfy it.

Does a reservation include an Emirates ticket number?

A paid Emirates ticket has a 13-digit number that normally starts with 176. A reservation is identified by its six-character booking reference instead. If a checklist specifically asks for a ticket number, you are being asked for a purchased ticket, and a reservation will not provide that.
