Colombia is one of the few countries where the onward-ticket rule is written into the immigration law itself, not just into airline practice. Migración Colombia, the agency at every airport and land crossing, lists an exit ticket among the things a foreign visitor must show on arrival, and missing one is a formal ground for refusing entry. This guide walks through what the agency's own letters say, how the 90-day permit and the 180-day yearly cap work, how to fill in Check-Mig, and where a held flight reservation fits (and where it might not). Every rule links to an official source at the end.
Colombia entry key facts for 2026
| Question | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Is an exit ticket required? | Yes, for visitors entering on a Permiso de Ingreso y Permanencia (PIP) or on a visa valid for six months or less. It can be air, land, sea or river travel.[1][2] |
| What if I have none? | "Carecer del tiquete de salida" is ground 13 for inadmission under Decree 1067 of 2015, article 2.2.1.11.3.2.[2] |
| How long can I stay visa-free? | A PIP of 90 days, extendable by another 90 without leaving, up to 180 days in one calendar year.[3] |
| Check-Mig form | Free online pre-registration, done from 72 hours to 1 hour before your flight. Not used for land crossings. Mistakes cannot be edited.[1][5] |
| Other documents at the desk | Hotel booking or invitation letter with address and phone, proof of funds, and proof of purpose if not tourism.[1] |
| Passport validity | No minimum for PIP entrants, but the agency recommends cover for your whole stay, and the passport must be valid when you leave.[1] |
| Who is visa-exempt? | Cancillería lists about 100 nationalities. Indian citizens qualify only with permanent residence, or a US or Schengen visa valid more than six months.[6] |
Do you need an onward ticket to enter Colombia?
Yes, if you are coming as a visitor without a long visa. In a reply published in June 2026, Migración Colombia lists what foreigners must present at entry. Item two is an exit ticket from Colombia "aéreo, terrestre, marítimo o fluvial" whenever you do not need a visa or your visa is valid for six months or less.[1] The same letter adds that every foreigner wanting to enter, "así sea con fines de tránsito", must show the exit ticket, or face inadmission.
That last line matters for people changing planes. Even a short transit through Bogotá on separate tickets can trigger the question, because you are passing through Colombian immigration.
The rule is not new. It sits in Decree 1067 of 2015, the consolidated decree for the foreign affairs sector, as amended in 2020. Ground 13 of its list of inadmission reasons reads, in translation, "lacking an exit ticket from Colombian territory" for foreigners entering on a PIP or on a visa valid for less than six months.[2]
What exactly does Migración Colombia say?
Here are the relevant lines from the agency's own published answers to traveller questions, with our translation. These are short extracts; follow the source links for the full text.
- On entry (June 2026): "Tiquete de salida de Colombia, aéreo, terrestre, marítimo o fluvial, cuando no deba presentar la visa o cuando la vigencia de la visa sea igual o inferior a 6 meses." An exit ticket by any mode, unless you hold a visa longer than six months.[1]
- Consequence: without that ticket, travellers "serán sujetos de inadmisión o rechazo". You can be refused entry.[1]
- Venezuela land border: people crossing from Venezuela by land may swap the exit ticket for a ticket to a Colombian city such as Cúcuta, Riohacha, Arauca, Puerto Carreño or Inírida.[1]
- On leaving (May 2026): a valid passport, an exit ticket, and Check-Mig completed between 72 hours and one hour before the flight.[4]
- Who carries you back: when someone is refused, the officer hands them to the transport company, which must return them immediately, by its own means or through another carrier (Decree 1067, article 2.2.1.11.3.1).[2]
That last point explains why your airline cares so much. If Colombia refuses you at El Dorado, the airline that flew you in has to take you out again. So the check-in agent in Madrid, Miami or Panama City will usually ask the question before Colombian officers ever see you. Agents work from IATA Timatic, the database airlines use for entry rules.[7]
Who has to show an exit ticket, and who doesn't?
The requirement follows your immigration status, not your nationality as such.
- Visa-exempt visitors on a PIP. This covers most tourists from Europe, the Americas, the UK, Australia and many others. You need the exit ticket.
- Visitors holding a Colombian visa valid for six months or less. You need it too, as both the decree and the June 2026 letter say.
- Holders of a Colombian visa valid for more than six months. The decree's wording only covers short visas and PIP entrants, so a longer visa takes you outside ground 13.[2] Airlines may still ask; carry your e-visa.
- Indian passport holders. Visa-free entry applies only if you show permanent residence, or a US or Schengen visa valid for more than six months. Otherwise you apply for a visa first, which is a different process; see our Colombia visa reservation guide.[6]
- Andean Community and Mercosur nationals. These travellers may enter with a national ID card instead of a passport.[6] The exit-ticket line in the June 2026 letter is not limited to passport holders, so plan to carry one.
Will a flight reservation satisfy Colombia's exit-ticket rule?
We will be straight with you here, because this is the question that matters. The Spanish word in the law is tiquete, a ticket. Migración Colombia's letters never mention reservations, holds or itineraries. A held reservation is a real booking with a live booking reference (PNR), but it is not a purchased ticket, and nobody should present it as one.
In practice, airlines decide first. Many check-in desks accept a verifiable onward booking that shows your name, a date inside your permitted stay and a reference they can look up. Some agents, and some carriers, insist on a ticket that has been paid for. At the Colombian immigration desk, an officer applying ground 13 literally could ask whether your booking is paid. If asked, tell the truth: it is a reservation.
Our honest view: if you know how you are leaving Colombia, buy that ticket. A cheap one-way flight to Panama, Lima or Quito, or an international bus ticket into Ecuador, meets the wording with no argument. A held reservation is a lower-cost way to answer an airline's onward-travel question when your exit really is undecided, and you accept that a strict officer may want more.
Two practical points if you do use a reservation. First, make the exit date fall inside the 90 days of your PIP. Second, book it close to your flight so the booking is still live on the day; the hold window is shown before you pay.
Options for proving onward travel from Colombia, compared
| Option | Matches the word "tiquete"? | Money at risk | Flexibility | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paid one-way flight out (budget carrier) | Yes | The fare, often non-refundable | Low, unless the fare allows changes | Travellers who know their next country |
| International bus ticket (e.g. to Ecuador) | Yes, land tickets are named in the rule | Usually small | Varies by company | Overland travellers heading south |
| Fully refundable airline fare | Yes, while it stays issued | Whole fare until the refund arrives | High | Anyone needing a paid ticket without commitment |
| Return ticket home | Yes | Fare | Depends on fare rules | Fixed holidays |
| Held flight reservation with live PNR | No; it is a booking, not a purchase | ₹699 / $9 per passenger | High, rebook if plans move | Open itineraries where the airline accepts a verifiable booking |

How does Check-Mig work?
Check-Mig is Migración Colombia's free online pre-registration. Both entering and departing travellers fill it in, Colombians included. It is separate from your exit ticket, and you need both. Here is the process, based on the agency's June 2026 instructions:[1][5]
- Wait until you are within 72 hours of departure. The form opens 72 hours before your flight and closes one hour before it.
- Use only the official site. Go to migracioncolombia.gov.co and choose Check-Mig, or open the pre-registration page directly (link in the sources).
- Enter your trip and passport details carefully. The agency warns that a record filled in wrongly by mistake cannot be edited afterwards.
- Keep the confirmation email. If it doesn't arrive, use the "Consultar y descargar" option on the same site to find your record.
- Do it again when you leave. The departure form is a separate entry.
Two further notes. Check-Mig is not completed for land entries or exits. And it is free: if anyone charges you for it, the agency asks you to report it.[1] Our habit is to fill it in the evening before an early flight, with the passport open beside the laptop.
How long can you stay, and how does the 180-day count work?
A visa-exempt visitor normally gets a PIP for 90 days. You can extend it for another 90 days without leaving Colombia, provided your total stay does not pass 180 days in the same calendar year.[3] The count resets on 1 January, not on a rolling basis.
Ground 14 of the inadmission list covers people who have already spent 180 days in Colombia, continuously or in pieces, in one calendar year and try to enter again that year.[2]
An example, purely for illustration. Say you spent 70 days in Colombia between February and April, and you fly back to Medellín on 1 October. You have 110 days left for this calendar year, but your new PIP is still for 90 days at a time. An exit date of mid-December fits both limits. An exit date in late January also works on the 180-day count, because January starts a new year, but it would need an extension of the PIP. When you choose the date on your onward booking, keep it within the 90 days you are actually granted on arrival.
Don't confuse the two limits. An onward booking proves you plan to leave; it does not extend your permit. Overstaying is a separate problem with its own penalties.
What else will the immigration officer ask for?
The exit ticket is one item on a short list. Migración Colombia's June 2026 letter also names:[1]
- A hotel reservation or an invitation letter from where you will stay, with the address and contact phone numbers. An invitation letter needs both people's identification, the host's address and phone, and a signature. It does not need to be notarised.
- Proof of funds for your stay. Bank or card statements can be attached to an invitation letter.
- A document showing the purpose of your visit, if it is something other than tourism.
If you are sorting out the accommodation side too, our hotel booking for visa page explains what a verifiable stay reservation includes. Keep your story consistent: the city on your hotel booking, the dates on your onward booking and what you say at the desk should line up.
What should your onward booking show?
- Your name exactly as printed in your passport, the one you will hand to the officer.
- A departure from Colombia: from Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali or any other airport, or a bus leaving the country.
- A date inside your 90-day permit, counted from your arrival date.
- A destination you can explain. Home, or a next country you could genuinely be visiting.
- A booking reference that works on the airline's "Manage booking" page. Check it yourself the day before you fly, using our verification walkthrough.
A simple timeline for a trip to Colombia
Say you fly from Madrid to Bogotá on 14 November and plan to wander for about seven weeks before heading somewhere in Central America.
- A few weeks out: confirm you are visa-exempt on Cancillería's list, and check your passport will be valid until you leave.
- A week out: book your first nights' accommodation and decide how you will prove onward travel: a paid ticket if your next step is fixed, a reservation if it isn't.
- Two or three days out: if you are using a reservation, book it now, dated within 90 days of 14 November. Check the PNR on the airline's website.
- Within 72 hours of the flight: complete Check-Mig and save the confirmation.
- At check-in: have the onward booking, accommodation details and Check-Mig email on your phone, plus a printout if your battery is unreliable.
- At the Bogotá desk: answer questions plainly and describe your documents accurately.
Mistakes that cause trouble at the Colombian border
- An exit date beyond 90 days from arrival, or beyond your remaining 180-day allowance for the year.
- Treating Check-Mig as the onward proof. It is a registration form, not evidence that you will leave.
- Filling in Check-Mig on an unofficial site or paying someone for it.
- A booking in a slightly different name, for example a missing middle name.
- An edited or invented ticket. Entering with false documents is ground 9 for inadmission, and lying to the officer is ground 12.[2] We never produce edited tickets, and you should never use one.
- Ignoring the transit rule on separate tickets through Colombia.
Staying longer than 180 days?
The visitor permit is built for trips, not for living in Colombia. If you want to stay longer and work remotely for foreign clients, Cancillería created a digital nomad visa in 2022 that can be granted for up to two years.[8] A visa valid for more than six months also takes you outside the exit-ticket rule described above. Our guide for digital nomads and one-way travellers covers long-stay options across several countries. Heading on to Central America afterwards? Our Costa Rica onward ticket guide explains why a paid ticket is the safer choice there.
How to get a verifiable onward reservation for Colombia
If your exit really is undecided and you want an airline-verifiable booking, we can hold a seat for you on a real flight out of Colombia, under a PNR that shows your passport name and the date you pick. That booking is unpaid, so it is not a ticket and won't get you on a plane.
Prices are per passenger, one way or round trip, and the PDF is emailed in about 10 minutes. You pay through Razorpay by UPI, card or netbanking, and you can follow an order on the tracking page. Full pricing is on the dummy ticket price page; the general background is on our onward ticket page and on the home page.
Leaving Colombia but not sure when?
Reservation with a live PNR, dated inside your 90-day permit. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Colombia onward ticket: frequently asked questions
Does Colombia really check for an onward ticket?
Yes. It is in the law, not only in airline policy. Decree 1067 of 2015 lists the lack of an exit ticket as a ground for refusing entry to visitors on a PIP or a short visa, and Migración Colombia repeats the requirement in its 2026 replies to travellers. In practice, your airline usually asks first, at check-in, because it must fly you back if you are refused.
Can I use a bus ticket out of Colombia as proof?
Colombian rules accept it: the exit ticket can be by air, land, sea or river. A bus ticket to Ecuador, for example, fits the wording. The catch is the airline flying you in, which may prefer to see a flight. If you plan to show a bus ticket, carry the paid ticket with your name on it and be ready to explain the route.
Is Check-Mig the same thing as proof of onward travel?
No. Check-Mig is a free pre-registration form that you complete between 72 hours and one hour before your flight, on entry and again on departure. It records who is travelling. The exit ticket is separate evidence that you will leave within your permitted stay. You need both when you fly into Colombia as a visitor.
How many days can my onward ticket be from my arrival date?
Keep it within the stay you are granted, which for visa-exempt visitors is normally 90 days on the PIP. Although you can extend by another 90 days, up to 180 in a calendar year, the extension is not automatic, so an exit date beyond day 90 invites questions. Also check how many days you have already used this calendar year.
Will a held reservation be accepted in Colombia?
Often at airline check-in, but nobody can promise it. The law speaks of a ticket, and a reservation is a booking that has not been paid for. If an officer asks, say it is a reservation. Where you know your exit, buying a cheap real ticket removes the doubt; where you don't, a verifiable reservation is the lower-cost choice.
Do I need an onward ticket if I am only transiting through Bogotá?
If you pass through Colombian immigration, yes. Migración Colombia says the exit ticket applies even to entry for transit purposes. If you stay airside on a single through ticket, your onward flight is already on that ticket. On separate tickets, show the onward booking for your next flight.
Do Indian citizens need an onward ticket for Colombia?
Indians are visa-exempt only with permanent residence, or a US or Schengen visa valid for more than six months, according to Cancillería. If you qualify, you enter on a PIP and the exit-ticket rule applies. If you don't, you need a Colombian visa first, and your onward or return booking becomes part of that application.
