Dummy Ticket for Mongolia Visa: The K2 e-Visa, Flight Bookings and Transit Tickets for Indians

Mongolia used to mean a trip to the embassy in New Delhi with a paper form and a photo of exactly the right size. For Indians, the e-visa has changed that. You apply online, pay, and receive the visa by email. What has not changed is the question every applicant asks: do I need to show a flight? The honest answer differs for a tourist e-visa, a paper visa at an embassy, and a transit visa at the border, so we take each in turn below, quoting Mongolia's foreign ministry and immigration agency.

Who needs a visa for Mongolia?

Indian passport holders do. On the foreign ministry's exemption list, India appears only for diplomatic and official passports (up to 90 days), so ordinary passports need a visa.^[4] Indians are, however, eligible to apply online.^[3] Mongolia's foreign ministry says the government began issuing e-visas to citizens of 98 countries to support tourism, and that applicants no longer have to hand in passports and original documents at a mission.^[1]

Other passports fare differently. US citizens have had 90 days visa-free since 2001, and Macau passports also get 90 days. The UK, Australia, New Zealand and a long list of European states are on a temporary tourism exemption of up to 30 days, which the ministry says runs until the end of 2026.^[4] If you hold a second passport, check the list before you pay for an e-visa.

The e-visa notice the Indian Embassy published adds a practical instruction: hold a digital or printed copy of the e-visa "to present to airlines and Mongolian border officials".^[3] Airlines will check it at your departure airport, before you ever see Ulaanbaatar.

What do Mongolia's official lists actually ask for?

There are three different lists depending on how you apply. Here is what each says, in the ministry's or agency's words where possible.

1. Tourist visa at a Mongolian embassy

For a paper tourist visa, Mongolia's consular department asks for:^[1]

• A completed application form.
• The original passport, valid for at least six months before your intended travel.
• A 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo; the ministry stresses that the size is mandatory.
• Proof that the visa fee has been paid; the fee is non-refundable.
• Proof of sufficient funds, such as six months of bank statements, "if necessary".

All documents must be hard copies, and the embassy will not accept soft copies. The list ends with an important notice: the visa officer may ask for additional documents to prove the purpose of your visit.^[1] Normal processing is three working days, with expedited service for an extra fee; some files take five to ten working days.

2. The e-visa terms

The evisa.mn terms set the rules rather than a document list:^[2]

• Information must be accurate, correct and complete; wilful dishonesty can lead to refusal of the application or of entry.
• The passport must be valid for at least 180 days before intended travel.
• The e-visa cannot be extended or converted, and the fee is not refunded.
• A visa does not guarantee entry; you can still be refused on arrival.
• Travel on the same passport you applied with, or carry the old one if you have renewed.
• Biometrics are captured at the border.
• Whoever invites or accommodates you must register you online within 48 hours of arrival.

3. Transit visa at the border

The foreign ministry says a transit visa can be applied for at Mongolian borders "if the applicant has an onward flight/train ticket or obtained a visa if applicable, of the country he or she plans to visit immediately after Mongolia". It allows a stay of up to 10 days.^[1]

So do you need a flight ticket for a Mongolia tourist visa?

For the tourist visa, the official list we found does not name a flight document at all. That surprises people. In practice, a flight plan still helps in two ways. The online form and the embassy officer both want to understand your trip, and the ministry openly reserves the right to ask for more documents. A clear, genuine itinerary is the simplest supporting paper you can offer.

A verifiable flight reservation fits well here. It shows when you arrive and leave, matches the 30-day limit, and does not commit you to a fare before the visa exists. Describe it accurately, as a reservation or itinerary, if anyone asks.

We'd add one opinion. Mongolia's tourist season is short and flights fill up in summer. If your dates are fixed and the fare is refundable, buying early is no bad thing. If your dates are still loose, apply with a reservation and buy once the visa email arrives.

How to apply for the K2 e-visa, step by step

1. Check your passport. At least 180 days of validity before you travel, and the passport you will actually carry.
2. Plan the dates. Up to 30 days. Say you want to arrive on 4 July for the Naadam season: plan a departure by early August at the latest, with margin.
3. Book accommodation. Your host or hotel must register you within 48 hours of arrival, so choose somewhere that knows how.
4. Prepare the flight plan. A return reservation into and out of Chinggis Khaan International Airport, or a rail itinerary if you arrive by train.
5. Apply on evisa.mn. Choose K2, fill in every field as your passport reads, and upload what the form asks for.
6. Pay the fee. It is non-refundable once paid.
7. Watch your email. The ministry says up to 72 hours; the Indian Embassy notice says 48.
8. Print the e-visa and carry it with your passport for the airline and the border officer.

How do Indians get to Ulaanbaatar?

Usually with a connection. Mongolia's main gateway is Chinggis Khaan International Airport near Ulaanbaatar, and from India the journey normally goes through an East or South-East Asian hub, or through Istanbul or a European hub on longer routings. Mongolia's national airline, MIAT, lists newer routes such as Singapore, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Tokyo and Frankfurt among its network.^[5] Check the carrier's live schedule before you plan; seasonal routes come and go.

Each hub raises its own transit question. A connection in mainland China, South Korea or Japan has its own rules for Indian passport holders, and they change once you leave the airside area. Our guides to the China visa, South Korea visa and transit visas cover those checks.

For business, work and study visas, the inviting person or company must first obtain visa permission from the Immigration Agency of Mongolia, and only then can you apply at the embassy.^[1] A flight reservation is a minor part of that file.

What do the airline and Mongolian border check?

At your departure airport, the airline will look for the e-visa printout or digital copy. Some agents also ask how you are leaving Mongolia, especially on a one-way booking; carry your return or onward plan.

At the border, biometrics are taken, and the officer can still refuse entry; the terms say a visa does not guarantee admission.^[2] Within 48 hours, your hotel or host registers you online. The foreign ministry adds that a regular tourist visa allows up to 30 days and can be extended once for 30 more at the Immigration Agency, if you apply at least four days before expiry. The e-visa terms, however, say an e-visa is non-extendable, so if you think you'll need longer, raise it before choosing the e-visa route.^[1][2]

By the time you are at the airport, you should hold a ticket you can actually use to leave. A reservation is a visa-stage document; travel is a different stage.

Which Mongolian stages accept a reservation?

The pattern is the same one you see across Asia. Where a government asks for a plan, a genuine reservation is a fair way to show it. Where it says "ticket" at a border, assume it means something you could actually travel on. Example: you are flying Delhi to Ulaanbaatar via a hub on 4 July and home on 25 July. For the K2 application, a return reservation for those dates sits neatly beside your hotel booking. On 3 July, at the check-in desk, you want the purchased ticket in hand instead.

If you use a reservation, what should it show?

• The same name and passport details as your e-visa form. The terms warn that inaccurate information can lead to refusal.
• Arrival and departure dates no more than 30 days apart.
• Ulaanbaatar as the arrival and departure point, or the rail border if part of the trip is by train.
• A live booking code that you have opened on the airline's lookup page. Here is how to check a reservation step by step.

Timing: make it a day or two before you apply. Ours stay held for up to two weeks; each carrier decides the precise expiry. With e-visa decisions coming back in two or three days, that window is ample.

Mistakes we see on Mongolia applications

• A passport with less than 180 days left when you plan to travel.
• The wrong photo size on an embassy application; the ministry calls the 3.5 × 4.5 cm size mandatory.
• Choosing the e-visa when you need longer than 30 days. It cannot be extended.
• Relying on a reservation for a border transit visa, where the wording is "onward flight/train ticket".
• Staying with friends who don't register you within 48 hours.
• An invented itinerary or edited PDF. The e-visa terms treat wilful dishonesty as grounds for refusal.

Getting a verifiable reservation for Mongolia

Mongolia visa: frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Mongolia?

Yes. India is not visa-exempt, but Indian citizens can apply online through evisa.mn for the K2 tourist e-visa, the K4 events and filming e-visa, or the K6 transit e-visa. Stays of up to 30 days are covered. You can still apply at a Mongolian embassy with printed documents if you prefer or need another visa type.

Does the Mongolia e-visa ask for a flight ticket?

The foreign ministry's tourist visa list does not name a flight ticket, though it lets officers request extra documents to prove the purpose of your visit. A genuine return itinerary is sensible supporting proof and keeps your dates within 30 days. For a transit visa at the border, the wording is an onward flight or train ticket.

How long does the Mongolia e-visa take?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says e-visas are sent by email within 72 hours, and the Indian Embassy notice we found says 48 hours. Embassy paper visas normally take three working days, with expedited service at extra cost, and some files take five to ten working days. Apply at least two weeks ahead of travel to be safe.

Can I extend a Mongolia e-visa?

No. The evisa.mn terms say the e-visa is non-extendable and non-convertible. The foreign ministry mentions a 30-day extension for a regular tourist visa if you apply at least four days before it expires, but that refers to the conventional visa. If you might stay longer than 30 days, ask the embassy before choosing.

What passport validity does Mongolia require?

For the e-visa, your passport must be valid for at least 180 days before your intended travel. The embassy's tourist visa list says six months. Either way, renew first if your passport is close. If you renew after getting the e-visa, carry the old passport on which the e-visa was issued.

Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Mongolia?

On-arrival tourist visas are for nationals of listed countries, and transit visas at the border need an onward flight or train ticket or the next country's visa. For most Indian travellers, the e-visa applied for before departure is the reliable route. Non-tourist on-arrival visas need prior approval requested by the inviting person or entity.

Who registers me after I arrive in Mongolia?

The person, organisation or hotel that invites or accommodates you must register you online within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels used to foreign guests handle this routinely. If you are staying with friends or in a ger camp, ask your host in advance whether they know the process.
