Dummy Ticket for Return Flight Proof: When a Reservation Is Enough

A dummy ticket works as return-flight proof when the authority asks for a reservation or itinerary, as the Netherlands does for Schengen visas. It does not work where a paid ticket is demanded, such as New Zealand at check-in. Check which case applies, then book a live-PNR reservation from $9.

Return-flight rules vary: four official examples

  • Netherlands (Schengen): the tourism checklist asks for a reservation in your name for travel to and from the Schengen area and says a paid ticket is not required. Source: netherlandsworldwide.nl.
  • New Zealand: visa-waiver visitors must show a ticket to leave at the end of their stay, and Immigration New Zealand says onward tickets must be paid for before travel. Source: immigration.govt.nz.
  • Thailand, applying in the UAE: the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Dubai requires confirmed round-trip tickets from the UAE issued by airlines and states that agency or email bookings will not be accepted. Source: dubai.thaiembassy.org.
  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents lists flight bookings among the less useful evidence for visit applications, unless you are transiting. Source: gov.uk.

Choosing the return date

The return should close the trip you describe, not leave a cushion "to be safe". A longer stay than your leave letter or funds support invites questions. Take a twelve-night Schengen holiday from 3 to 15 March: the reservation, insurance and hotel should all run from the 3rd to the 15th, and the visa form should state the same.

Return versus onward

A return flight takes you home; an onward flight takes you to a third country. Many rules accept either, but an onward leg only helps if you are allowed to enter the next country. If you are travelling on a one-way plan, our onward ticket page explains that case in more detail.

What happens on travel day

Visa officers and check-in agents look for different things. The officer reviewing your application asks whether the dates make sense; the agent at the airport may want a ticket that leaves the destination. Once the visa is issued, buy the actual return or onward fare so you have a paid ticket number to show if asked.

Worked example

Kavya, a designer from Andheri, applies to the Netherlands for a spring break. She books BOM–AMS on 3 March and AMS–BOM on 15 March for ₹699, the same price she would pay for a single leg. Her brother, a British citizen flying to Auckland that winter without a visa, takes a different route: because Immigration New Zealand wants a paid onward ticket, he buys a flexible fare out of New Zealand instead of relying on a reservation.

Return-flight proof FAQs

Will the airline accept my reservation as return proof at check-in?

Not where the destination requires a paid ticket. Airlines enforce those rules at check-in, so for places like New Zealand buy a real, preferably refundable, return fare.

Does a reservation satisfy a Schengen embassy's return-flight requirement?

Where the checklist asks for a reservation, as the Dutch one does, yes. Always read the checklist of the country you are applying to.

Is a round trip more expensive than one way?

No. The price is per passenger and identical for one way or round trip: ₹699 in India, AED 33 in the UAE, SAR 34 in Saudi Arabia, £7 in the UK and $9 in most other countries.

What if I do not know my return date yet?

Choose the date you would realistically come back and use it consistently on the form, insurance and hotel booking. If plans shift before submission, ask support for a corrected reservation.

Dummy ticket price by country

The price follows the country of your phone number, not the destination. One way and round trip cost the same; multi-city itineraries are priced per pair of flights and a hotel booking costs the same per stay.

Watch: how to book a dummy ticket

A short walkthrough of the booking page, 1 minute 23 seconds with voice-over: enter your route and passengers, pay, and receive your reservation with its PNR by email.

  1. Route and passengers. Choose one way, round trip or multi-city, pick the airports and dates, and enter names as on the passport.
  2. Pay. UPI, cards or netbanking through Razorpay.
  3. Receive your PNR. The reservation arrives by email in about 10 minutes.

Why a live reservation beats a free "ticket generator"

A generated ticket has no PNR. A visa officer who checks it finds nothing, and a refusal for a false document is the hardest kind to appeal.
